Whenever someone mentions the live-action adaptation of Green Lantern, fans recall the infamous 2011 movie that featured Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan. When Lanterns was announced, it gave fans some hope that Hal Jordan would finally get the treatment he deserves.

According to Variety, Safran said that Lanterns will focus on two of the most prominent Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart. The show will be like “True Detective, terrestrial-based investigation story.”

However, some recent updates have put doubts on Hal Jordan’s future. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Josh Brolin recently turned down the offer for Jordan, and now James Gunn has ignited more speculations with his social media post.

Gunn shared an image of John Stewart that was created by artists Jim Lee and Scott Williams. The post is cryptic as it has no caption or explanation, which left many fans wondering if Gunn is planning to sideline Hal Jordan for John Stewart.

The Green Lantern movie is considered one of the biggest missed opportunities in superhero cinema. The film had a weak story, poor CGI, and almost no character development. This disappointed many Jordan fans who are aware of the depth of his character.

The movie showed him as an immature, comedic superhero, and fans thought Lanterns could be a perfect show for a proper redemption of the character. Although John Stewart has his own fanbase, Hal Jordan’s story is usually considered more important to the Green Lantern mythos.

Why Hal Jordan Deserves Redemption in the New DCU

Hal Jordan has usually been the face of the Green Lantern Corps. His journey from a reckless test pilot to the Green Lantern, who is responsible for protecting Earth, also has the opportunity to show many moments that shaped his character.

Jordan is involved with the most popular and significant Green Lantern comic book storylines. Major events like Sinestro Corps War and Blackest Night revolve around him. Besides that, his relationship with other Lanterns, his rivalry with Sinestro, and his struggle to overcome fear offer good story-building opportunities.

On the other hand, John Stewart doesn’t have that many memorable comic book storylines. He got his popularity mainly because of his appearances in the Justice League animated series. His Marine background and stoic character might make him a better superhero, but Jordan has a more interesting and complex narrative from the show’s point of view.

So by focusing on Hal Jordan instead of John Stewart, Lanterns can finally give fans the redemption arc that they have been waiting for since 2011. However, since Jordan will be featured in the series anyway, it is yet to be seen what role he will play in saving the universe.

Green Lantern is available to stream on Prime Video.
