James Gunn’s Most Refreshing Move With 2 Creature Commandos Characters Is Giant Proof DCU Will Change Cinema
- Creature Commandos marks the beginning of the rebooted DCU.
- James Gunn's take on 2 important characters has impressed fans.
- Nina actress Zoë Chao weighs in on her relationship with her Task Force M teammate.
The cinema world might finally start to heal now that James Gunn has taken matters into his own hands as the co-CEO of DC Studios. Last month, DCU officially started with the animated TV show Creature Commandos, and its positive reception is the glimmer of hope the DCU franchise needed to know that it is going in the right direction- at least for now.
This show is the first installment of Chapter I: Gods and Monsters of the rebooted DCU, and true to its word, it features monsters, and several of them. The team of monsters, formed by Amanda Waller, mostly has men and only two females. Fans are finding the camaraderie and unexpected bonding between these two female characters, Nina and the Bride very refreshing.
The friendship between Nina and the Bride in James Gunn’s Creature Commandos has won fans’ hearts
Creature Commandos, written by James Gunn, is based on the DC military superhero team of the same name and sees the formation of that team done by A.R.G.U.S. director Amanda Waller. The team, led by Rick Flag Sr., is given the task to stop the powerful Amazonian sorceress Circe and her followers from wreaking havoc on the nation of Pokolistan.
The team, named Task Force M, has several members, namely, the Bride, Nina Mazusky, Doctor Phosphorus, G.I. Robot, and Weasel. Out of these, the Bride and Nina are the only female members, and soon enough a friendship buds between the two of them, although the former refuses to accept that at first.
What makes their friendship special is that it is completely platonic and devoid of any kind of rivalry to prove themselves the best, or a feud over a guy. These days, such relationships are rare in movies and TV shows as most of the time, it turns out that one of the characters had an ulterior motive or are enemies at first. Fans have not failed to miss this and a Redditor even pointed it out in their post.
Many other fans seem to agree with this take on the platonic same-gender relationship. Nina and the Bride’s friendship is truly one of the most wholesome storylines of the show.
Actress Zoë Chao reflects on Nina’s friendship with the Bride
The character of Nina is voiced by actress Zoë Chao while that of the Bride is voiced by Indira Varma. In an interview with DC.com ahead of the release of the finale episode of the show, Chao reflected on Nina’s relationship with the Bride. She said:
I think Nina is a real girl’s girl, but also, I think she recognizes in Bride someone who’s walked through a lot of fire and trauma, and I think they fundamentally understand each other because they’ve both been through a lot. And, yeah, it is a friendship!
She also mentioned that she thinks that Nina likes the Bride because the latter is “salty and hot” unlike Nina herself. The fact that the Bride also cares about Nina becomes absolutely evident when she finds out about her death.
This gives her a bigger reason to kill Princess Ilana, because she is the one responsible for Nina’s demise. It is only then that the emotional complexity of the Bride’s character becomes apparent as she mourns her friend’s death. This shows that despite her nonchalant attitude towards Nina at first, she actually cared for her. This is what makes the characters of the show even more relatable.
