The Recording Academy had plans to bestow her with the Global Impact Award, but those plans fell through due to complications. The Grammy Awards wanted to acknowledge Jackson’s contribution to the music industry, especially with CBS’s treatment  after her infamous Super Bowl Halftime performance, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Janet Jackson Pre-Grammy Event Snag

The Grammys wanted Janet Jackson to attend a pre-Grammy event for the Black Music Collective, days before the main event, to accept the award, but her schedule wouldn’t allow it. From there, the Grammy organizers began talking about ways CBS could either apologize or figure out a way to acknowledge how she was treated by the network, but things just got too complicated and talks ended.

The incident took place during Super Bowl XXVIII, which was broadcasted on CBS. Justin Timberlake ripped off Jackson’s top, revealing her br**st, which resulted in CBS receiving a lot of criticism. CBS CEO Les Moonves pulled Janet’s invitation to the Grammys that year, making her persona non grata.

It’s unclear if both he and Jackson were to receive the award, or if Wayne received his in place of Jackson.
