Jude Law has been in the entertainment industry for decades now. For years, he has starred in franchises and projects that have become fan favorites. This time around, he is going to star in a franchise that has probably been most actors’ dream to work in, and it’s none other than Star Wars, the foundations for which were laid by George Lucas.

Lucas’ original vision for the franchise was to create an expansive universe in which there are many planets other than Earth and creatures that are beyond people’s imagination. However, Law’s upcoming series Skeleton Crew seems to be built in a universe that is very similar to Earth and fans are understandably not very happy about it.

With its ever-expanding universe and countless movies, shows, merch, and whatnot, Star Wars is undoubtedly one of the biggest franchises to exist. It began with the eponymous movie, released in 1977 and directed by Lucas. The film was followed by The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, released in 1980 and 1983, respectively.

Although Lucas conceived the stories for the films, different directors brought them to life. Lucas took over the director’s chair once again in 1999 to helm the prequel trilogy. Throughout the years, different directors have worked on the movies and shows, and they have tried their best to stay true to the Indiana Jones filmmaker’s vision.

One of the prospects of his visions is diverse universe-building, but Jude Law’s show is apparently set in a universe that looks very much like Earth as can be seen in the recently released trailer. Some fans have pointed this out online and expressed their disappointment about it since it beats the original motto of creating the franchise.

Fans on X expressed their frustration about the lack of creativity in building a universe that would not resemble Earth, and they seem to have a point. On the other hand, some fans have shown their support for the same universe.

The thing is that while the existence of a suburban city is not impossible, viewers usually expect to see something different than what they usually see. If they show a suburb like Earth on the screens in a Star Wars project, it would be hard for viewers to imagine that the events are happening in a place that is far away from the universe they live in.

Keeping that in mind, it would have been best to show a universe that differs from Earth rather than expecting fans to believe that there is a universe far away from here that bears a stark resemblance with Earth of all universes. However, that is also not completely impossible and some fans have also defended the decision pointing this out.

Over the years, many actors, directors, and creatives have cited Star Wars projects as the movies that piqued their interest in the film industry. Jude Law has turned out to be no different as he has recently stated that it was his love for these films that led to him embarking on an acting career.

While talking to PEOPLE at the D23 Expo, the actor explained how Star Wars impacted his life as a child. He said that he was 9 or 10 when the first film was released. It changed his life in a way that can barely remember his life before that age.

Speaking about him landing a lead role in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, he said:

I suppose looking back now, it was a big part of my love affair with film, the beauty of film as storytelling and therefore perhaps what inspired me to act and what why I wanted to be in that world.

His lifelong dream to be a part of the intergalactic franchise has finally come true. Now, it remains to be seen how fans and critics react to the upcoming series upon release.

Skeleton Crew is set to premiere on Disney+ on December 3, 2024.
