Brothel Manager Ros was not a part of the Books

The young, wide-eyed girl we are introduced to in the first season of Game of Thrones called Ros is nowhere to be found in A Song of Ice and Fire. We knew the showrunners took some creative liberties with the series to better adapt it for the screen, but we didn’t expect them to add new characters from scratch.

To their credit, Ros is not entirely out of bounds. A prostitute named Alayaya exists in the books and comes up once or twice throughout the narrative. Ros, on the other hand, is seen since the very first season and proves to be instrumental in fleshing out the murky characters of Pycell, Littlefinger, and Lord Varys.

Ros starts out as a prostitute under Littlefinger’s employ and further goes on to be a brothel manager in Westeros. Her presence brings out the true character of every central person in the story. It’s as if she reveals how people act behind closed doors and gives viewers an insight into their innermost desires and qualities.

This made her a pivotal part of how Varys gathered dirt on various people. Since many let their guard down in front of Ros, she was able to pay attention to the little things and collect information useful for Lord Varys when she came into his employ. It is further said that Ros is the first character the showrunners created and added to the show after which many followed suit.

Other Characters created just for Game of Thrones

Since the first season itself, the creators of Game of Thrones took advantage of creative freedom and added characters in certain parts of the story to give it more substance. It further gave a human element to some scenes where it was important to show how the wars affected the people.

Take Talisa for example, Robb Stark’s wife. The books outline Robb’s marriage to a woman called Jeyne only due to his honor, but the show witnesses the eldest Stark falling in love with another woman who loses her wife to the neverending quest for the throne.

Another character similar to Ros is Olyvar, the love interest of Loras Tyrell. He also gives an insight into how characters behave when they believe nobody is watching. Though many believe his love for Loras is true, he turns out to be a spy for Littlefinger and helps him carry on his business as well.

Such nuanced characters apart from the central ones give the story a more well-rounded feel and cover all bases when it comes to knowing what’s happening across Westeros.
