King of the Hill Voice Cast: Every Major Character and Who Plays Them

Mike Judge and Greg Daniels’ King of the Hill often had a small ensemble cast of actors doing the heavy lifting in terms of vocal performances, with one actor lending their voice for multiple characters. This tradition was brought back to the 2025 revival as well, with some new additions replacing deceased cast members.

The show focuses on the city of Arlen, Texas, and it is populated with several quirky and hilarious characters, perfectly representative of a typical American town. While the show focuses on members of the Hill family, few other characters form the major cast of the show. Here are all the actors who voice the main characters.

1. Mike Judge – Hank Hill and Jeff Boomhauer

Co-creator Mike Judge took on the responsibility of giving the show’s main character his voice. Judge voices Hank Hill and his neighbor Jeff Boomhauer, and they could not be more different. Hank’s distinct nasal voice fits him perfectly, while Jeff mumbles more and his accent is often unintelligible. Judge has voiced the characters since 1997 and returned for the revival.

2. Toby Huss – Dale Gribble, Cotton Hill, Kahn Souphanousinphone, Joe Jack

Toby Huss originally voiced three supporting characters in the Fox run. He voiced Hank’s blustery father Cotton Hill, status-obsessed neighbor Kahn Souphanousinphone, and propane co-worker Joe Jack. Now, he is taking on the show’s biggest recast challenge in the revival. Following Johnny Hardwick’s death in 2023, Huss stepped in as Dale Gribble starting in the new season’s seventh episode, while Ronny Chieng took over Kahn.

3. Johnny Hardwick – Dale Gribble (1997–2010)

In the original series run, the character of Dale Gribble was voiced by Johnny Hardwick. The actor was also a story editor, writer, and producer on the show before his untimely death in 2023. He was 64 when he passed away. While Toby Huss took over the character in the revival, Hardwick’s performance defines the character and is still etched in the memory of fans.

4. Stephen Root – Bill Dauterive and Buck Strickland

Widow’s Bay and Barry star Stephen Root shows his range as an actor in King of the Hill, playing both Bill Dauterive, Hank’s barber, and his boss at Strickland Propane, Buck Strickland. While Bill is a mournful character who is always pining after his wife, Buck is a boozy, philandering casanova who is more jovial. Root balances both perfectly.

5. Kathy Najimy – Peggy Hill

Kathy Najimy has voiced Hank’s wife Peggy since 1997, and her performance is central to one of the show’s longest-running comic ideas: a woman of boundless, often misplaced self-confidence who’s certain she excels at everything from Spanish instruction to football coaching. She reprises the role fully in the Hulu revival, with Peggy adjusting alongside Hank to an Arlen that’s changed considerably during their years away.

6. Pamela Adlon – Bobby Hill

Pamela Adlon’s performance as Bobby Hill is one of the most incredible ones in King of the Hill. Beginning with Bobby’s adolescence in the original series, Adlon’s voice gave the character a gentleness that made him distinct from other characters in the series. In the revival, Adlon returned to voice him in his adulthood, making it her most challenging vocal performance so far. However, the transition is beautiful and retains the innocence of the character.

7. Ronny Chieng – Kahn Souphanousinphone (since 2025)

Ronny Chieng is a new addition to the cast in the Hulu revival, taking over for Toby Huss. Chieng voices Kahn Souphanousinphone, bringing a sense of authenticity to the Laotian-American character. Co-creator Greg Daniels had assured fans that a non-Asian actor would not be cast in the role if it were made today, and it was rectified in the revival.

8. Lauren Tom – Minh and Connie Souphanousinphone

Lauren Tom has voiced both Kahn’s sharp-tongued, relentlessly competitive wife Minh and their daughter Connie, Bobby’s academic-overachiever love interest, since the original series began, making her one of the few original cast members to return.

Managing two characters within the same family required Tom to distinguish a mother’s controlling intensity from a daughter’s more anxious, striving personality, and she’s carried both distinctions into the Hulu revival unchanged.

9. Ashley Gardner – Nancy Gribble and Reverend Karen Stroup

Dale and Nancy Gribble

Nancy’s affair with John Redcorn is one of the show’s best-kept secrets from Dale, who is Nancy’s husband. Ashley Gardner voices Nancy Gribble and brings a lot of humanity to the character. Somehow, the whole of Arlen knows about the affair, but Dale is blissfully unaware. The affair is brought up in the revival but is written off. Gardner also voices Reverend Karen Stroup, the First Methodist minister of Arlen.

10. Jonathan Joss – John Redcorn (1998–2025)

The role of John Redcorn was first portrayed by Victor Aaron in King of the Hill’s first season. However, he was replaced by Jonathan Joss after his untimely death in 1996. John Redcorn was the new-age healer in Arlen, whose affair with Nancy Gribble is the cause of many jokes. However, Joss also passed away in 2025, with his work in the first season of the revival being his final performance. The character has been written off the show for now.

11. Brittany Murphy – Luanne Platter and Young Joseph Gribble

Brittany Murphy voiced two roles in the original series: Peggy’s warm-hearted niece Luanne Platter, and Dale and Nancy’s son Joseph before the character hit puberty. Murphy died in December 2009, and both of her characters were affected by her absence. Neither is mentioned by name in the new season, a choice creators have described as a deliberate tribute to Murphy’s legacy on the show.

12. Keith David – Brian Robertson

Veteran actor Keith David, known for his roles in Cloud Atlas and The Nice Guys, joined the cast of King of the Hill in the revival, playing a new character, Brian Robertson. He looked after the Hill household when Hank and Peggy were living abroad. David’s unmistakable voice adds to the ensemble, which has been tight-knit so far, expanding the core characters of the show.

13. Breckin Meyer – Joseph Gribble (Post-Puberty)

While a young Joseph Gribble was voiced by the late Brittany Murphy, Joseph, after hitting puberty, is played by Breckin Meyer. Meyer’s performance gave the teenage Joseph a more grounded, self-aware quality as the character grew into one of Bobby’s closest friends and the show’s most visible symbol of Dale’s willful blindness to his own family.

14. Tai LeClaire – Joseph Gribble (Revival)

Breckin Meyer did not return to the role in the Hulu revival, and he was replaced by Tai LeClaire. Stepping into a role shaped first by Brittany Murphy and then Breckin Meyer, LeClaire’s casting is emblematic of the revival’s broader approach: honoring original characters while bringing in new talent to carry them forward.
