My Hero Academia is a well-heard name that is associated with the shonen anime industry, and attached to that name is Kohei Horikoshi, the creator of My Hero Academia. The widely popular series established itself as a mainstream shonen manga among other industry titans like Jujutsu KaisenChainsaw Man, and Demon Slayer.

However, Horikoshi did not have it easy when he first started as a young manga artist in the late 2000s, but he persevered and achieved success with My Hero Academia in 2014, which took the manga industry by storm.

A huge fan of American comics himself, Horikoshi made his first-ever professional American appearance at the 2018 San Diego Comic-Con to an overwhelming crowd of adoring fans. Anime News Network (ANN) got an opportunity to talk to the mangaka about his humble beginnings, his love for American comics, and My Hero Academia.

In the 2018 interview with ANN, the interviewer asked Horikoshi whether he preferred to create male or female characters, to which the mangaka promptly replied that he did not see it that way and cared more about the character’s personalities.

Horikoshi stated:

I don’t really think about it that way. First and foremost I care about their personalities. The storytelling part – when I’m actually drawing it, illustrating the female characters is more fun.

Although he stated that he only cared about the personalities, he also addressed that during the storytelling part when he was drawing it, illustrating the female characters was more fun for him. However, he did not elaborate on why he found it more fun.

Kohei Horikoshi Was Surprised By Fans’ Reaction To Katsuki Bakugo

When asked whether there was a character that he had created that fans reacted to in a way he did not expect, Horikoshi mentioned Bakugo. He stated:

Bakugo has been a bit of a surprise. I assumed everyone would hate him, but it’s been the opposite. In the character questionnaires we do, Bakugo comes in #1 most popular.

Katsuki Bakugo is a famous character in My Hero Academia. He is a student in Class 1-A at U.A. High School and is training to become a Pro Hero. He is the deuteragonist of the series. His popularity comes as a surprise because he does not have a particularly likable character. In fact, he is arrogant, short-tempered, and aggressive. He tends to bully Quirkless Izuku Midoriya, and his behavior can be considered unheroic.

Despite this, Bakugo has earned a spot as an important character among Class 1-A and the fandom as well. Given that winning is his topmost priority, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that he tops the list of the most popular characters in My Hero Academia.
