Lily-Rose Depp’s Flop Show ‘The Idol’ Beating Selena Gomez’s ‘Only Murders in the Building’ at The Emmys Still Makes Sense For One Reason Alone
- 'The Idol' won an Emmy for Outstanding Choreography despite receiving mixed reviews.
- Jennie Kim’s dance performance outshined Selena Gomez's Hulu show in the category.
- The dance sequences, led by Nina McNeely, were a standout feature of the HBO series.
Did you catch the Emmys this year? If so, it won’t be a surprise. But if not, get ready to be stunned. You won’t believe it—HBO’s The Idol actually won an award despite its less-than-stellar reception.
The series, which aired just five episodes before being canceled, somehow managed to outshine favorites like Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building and Apple TV’s Physical. It wasn’t for its gripping storylines or stellar acting. Nope, it was for the dance moves! Who knew that in a show full of drama, the choreography would be the real star?
Yes, you heard that right—The Idol, which many dismissed as a flop, has taken home the trophy for Outstanding Choreography for Scripted Programming. How did this happen?
The show’s dance sequences were a standout, thanks in no small part to Jennie Kim of Blackpink. In a show that received mixed reviews, her dance performance was like a glimmer of gold in a sea of tarnish.
The Idol’s Choreography That Danced Its Way to the Emmys
When it comes to TV shows, dance might not always be the first thing that comes to mind. Yet for Lily-Rose Depp‘s The Idol, it was the dance routines that salvaged its reputation and won hearts. The show’s choreography, led by Nina McNeely, featured visually stunning and memorable dance sequences.
But the real star of the show was Blackpink’s Jennie Kim, whose debut acting role as Dyanne caught everyone’s attention. Her performance in the show’s dance scenes was nothing short of electric—she was like a bolt of lightning on stage, literally ‘Playing With Fire.’
Seriously, Kim’s moves were so flawless that she made the seasoned actors look like they were still learning the basics. Fans and critics alike were mesmerized by her presence on screen. Check out some fan reactions:
This explains why the show was nominated for an Emmy in the category against Only Murders in the Building and ultimately won. The K-pop idol, who’s usually rocking the stage as a member of Blackpink, made a huge impact with her acting debut in The Idol.
Playing Dyanne, a dancer juggling the chaos of her career and personal life, Nini didn’t just fill a supporting role—she delivered a performance crucial to the show’s Emmy win. The Solo star also won the Best Actress award in an International Series at the SEC Awards 2024 for her role as Dyanne.
Still, Only Murders in the Building Won Big in the Music Category
Though Selena Gomez‘s Only Murders in the Building didn’t win an Emmy for choreography, it did score big in music. Songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul joined the prestigious EGOT club at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys.
They took home the award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for their catchy song, Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It? from Hulu’s hit comedy series.
Pasek and Paul co-wrote the song with Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman for the show’s third season, episode 8, titled Sitzprobe, in which Steve Martin’s character performs it in a fictional musical within the series.
This win adds to Pasek and Paul’s impressive collection of awards: an Oscar in 2016 for City of Stars from La La Land, a Tony in 2017 for Dear Evan Hansen, and a Grammy in 2018 for the same show.
