Major Studios Including Disney and Netflix Finally Bend the Knee, Reportedly Forced to Negotiate Amid Writers Strike
In a significant development amid the ongoing writer’s strikes major studios such as Disney and Netflix have reportedly agreed to meet up with the Writers Guild of America (WGA) for a negotiation process. First time in 63 years Hollywood has seen a major shutdown as writers and actors are on the picket lines demanding fair paychecks. The strike which started back on May 2, has caused huge disruption for the entire industry. Although the upcoming meeting on Friday with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) has given new hopes.
Disney and Netflix to sit down with WGA for negotiation to end the ongoing strike
In a recent conversation, the WGA confirmed that they are going to sit down with the AMPTP on Friday to negotiate their term and put an end to the ongoing writer’s strike which has been in motion since May 2. On Tuesday, WGA said through one of its members, “The AMPTP, through Carol Lombardini, reached out to the WGA today and requested a meeting this Friday to discuss negotiations.”
“We’ll be back in communication with you sometime after the meeting with further information. As we’ve said before, be wary of rumors. Whenever there is important news to share, you will hear it directly from us,” added the speaker, which came from the WGA’s negotiating committee.
This move of negotiation has come into being as the strike reaches its 100th day with the aim to curb at least one strike that has been going on in Hollywood. Earlier this week sources confirmed that both parties were going to opt for the legal routes which would bring them back to the negotiating table.
What is the WGA strike all about?
The changing dynamics of the entertainment industry and their working practice have indeed affected the writers of the industry. As the adoption of online streaming channels has turned out to be one of the biggest trends in the industry, it hasn’t worked out very well for the writers.
To simply state what the strikers want is money aka fair pay, but it’s far more complex than that. During the old linear TV system writers were paid their writing fees and then over a period of time were paid residuals each time the show was repeated. Although with the new streaming trends, the pay rates of writers have been significantly affected due to several reasons.
This caused more than 150,000 television and movie writers to go on strike putting the Hollywood industry to shut down. Due to this strike, the next seasons of many popular shows have been delayed. Late-night shows are already airing reruns due to the writer’s strike. Big shows like Yellowjackets, Severance, and Strange Things have halted their work delaying the release of their upcoming seasons.
This ongoing strike has caused big trouble to everyone starting from the studios to the viewers. However, the upcoming meeting of both parties on Friday has sparked some rays of hope for the industry as well as for the writers.
