Details about Christopher Nolan‘s upcoming movie are still very hidden as usual. However, according to Variety, sources speculate that it could be an espionage thriller. Deadline reports that Universal Pictures will be producing the film, and it is aiming for a July 17, 2026 release.

Matt Damon is now in negotiations to be a part of this mystery project. If it happens, it will be Damon and Nolan’s third collaboration. The actor-director duo has previously worked in Interstellar and Oppenheimer. It appears that Nolan has found his new go-to actor.

Speaking of Oppenheimer, that film became a hit from Universal Studios. According to Box Office Mojo, it grossed over $975.5 million globally and secured seven Academy Awards. It is not a surprise that Universal is already ready for another Nolan masterpiece.

Moreover, Damon has been in the spy business before. In the Bourne franchise, Damon portrayed the lead character, Jason Bourne, an amnesiac assassin, in four films. Starting with The Bourne Identity in 2002, the last time Damon played Bourne was in 2016 in Jason Bourne.

These films redefined the spy thriller genre with action combined with complex, human stories. It might be possible that Nolan’s new movie lets Damon tap into his Bourne energy again. A Nolan-style spy thriller with Damon at the center could be a match made in movie heaven.

Matt Damon is not hiding his feelings towards playing Jason Bourne again. In an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, he talked about the possibility of an upcoming Bourne film, saying he was “as anxious as” Colbert and hoped he could do it.

However, Damon also acknowledged his age and probably hinted at passing the torch to another younger actor to carry on the legacy. He said,

At a certain point, someone’s gonna need to take it over. I’m not getting any younger.

According to an early report from Deadline, Universal was already working on another sequel to the Bourne franchise. Oscar-winning director of All Quiet on the Western Front, Edward Berger, was reported to direct the movie.

Damon, in his interview with Colbert, talked about the director as well. He said,

No details have been given to me! There’s a great director named Edward Berger who directed All Quiet on the Western Front. German director, he’s wonderful, and he said he had an idea. I would love to work with him – he’s working on it.

Although there has not been any further update about the new Bourne movie, Christopher Nolan’s new spy movie with Universal might spark fan speculations once again. Whether it is Jason Bourne or a new spy character, it looks like Matt Damon is ready for some serious espionage action.

The Bourne movies are available to buy or rent on Prime Video.
