One of the most eagerly awaited episodes of Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again will feature Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio reprising their respective parts as Wilson Fisk’s Kingpin and Matt Murdock/Daredevil, respectively. Worldwide devotees of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and comic books are anticipating how the upcoming series will play out.

Fans, however, are speculating as to whether or not characters including Luke Cage and Iron Fist will appear in the show, according to a recent report. It was suggested that it might be because, even though Marvel’s experiment to put some of the darker superheroes on Netflix was successful, Luke Cage and Iron Fist disappointed both critics and viewers.

Luke Cage and Iron Fist are NOT mentioned in Daredevil: Born Again

According to a recent tweet online, Luke Cage and Iron Fist are not a part of Daredevil: Born Again which is going to see Charlie Cox reprise his acclaimed character of Daredevil and they are not even mentioned in the call sheet. A user went ahead to mention that “That’s true… they’re not. Largely because they’re not bringing back Mike Colter or Finn Jones. They originally wanted to bring back Colter (along with Krysten Ritter, after bringing back Cox, D’Onofrio, and Bernthal) but I think they’ve moved on now. They’re moving in a new direction with Iron Fist (keep an eye on Shang Chi’s future sequel)”.

Another user commented, “That’s really disappointing if true. Luke Cage was solid overall, and Iron Fist improved a lot with the 2nd season. Even if they don’t bring back Danny Rand, Colleen Wing had the power of the fist, so she could take over.” Another user however pointed out that there is an entire year before the show comes out which means there is plenty of time to add mentions or anything of the sort.

Mike Colter no longer thinks about Luke Cage opportunities

Luke Cage played by actor Mike Colter spoke to Comicbook.com back in January where he mentioned that he is not sure if his character would appear in Daredevil: Born Again. He said at the time,

“I just try to stay in reasonable shape just because, but I don’t think about Luke Cage opportunities. It’s one of those things where it’s in the rearview mirror at this point. If somehow I get a call, my dance card is kind of full. But if I get a call, something happens, great. I had a good time.”

The actor continued, “I’d be happy to let someone else take over the character,” noting that Luke Cage has been around for a while and that fans will continue to be connected to him in some way throughout their lives. Colter continued by saying that while he is pleased to have contributed to that for the fans, he will also be content if someone else steps in.

Finn Jones desired another chance to be the best Iron Fist

The lead actor, Finn Jones, spoke out about the rumors that Marvel did not want him back when Iron Fist failed to impress the audience in 2020. When asked about the rumors that the studios would prefer not to have him return as Danny Rand, he said in an interview with Geekscape that if Marvel Studios would like him to return, he would do it, adding that he would like to prove someone wrong.

He said during the interview,

“I care about [Danny Rand] deeply. I believe in that character, I believe there is a lot of work that can be done. There’s something about the underdog. I love the underdog narrative. I love the ability to prove someone wrong. And I want to prove all those [doubters] wrong. I know I have it in me, and I know I can give the Danny Rand performance that fans want and I know is possible.”

However, stunt coordinator Brett Chan revealed in 2017 that the actor refused to prepare for the action scenes, which may be why the public and the studios believe the actor may not be the best choice to play Iron Fist in a film. Jones seemed excited to see Cox back on-screen as Daredevil as he mentioned that he is fantastic for the role and he is just thrilled to see him back in the character on-screen again.

Frequently asked questions

Which two Defenders-verse heroes is the MCU reportedly leaving out of Daredevil: Born Again?

According to the report, Luke Cage and Iron Fist are the two Defenders-verse heroes not expected to appear, meaning actors Mike Colter and Finn Jones are reportedly not being brought back for Daredevil: Born Again. The claim traces to a fan post on social media rather than an official Marvel Studios announcement or a confirmed call sheet, so it should be treated as a rumor until the studio comments.

Who is confirmed to return for Daredevil: Born Again?

Charlie Cox returns as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Vincent D'Onofrio reprises Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, with Jon Bernthal's Punisher also reported among the returning faces. All three originated in the Netflix Marvel shows, and Daredevil: Born Again is a Marvel Studios revival that streams on Disney+, with Cox and D'Onofrio positioned as central to the series.

Does this report mean Luke Cage and Iron Fist are gone from the MCU for good?

No. The report only addresses their absence from Daredevil: Born Again, not the wider MCU, and it remains speculative. Mike Colter has said he no longer thinks about Luke Cage opportunities, while Finn Jones has expressed willingness to play Danny Rand again, and Marvel has folded Netflix-era characters back into its canon before, so a future return for either hero is not ruled out.
