MCU Theory Explains How Thanos Knew Iron Man
One of the most enduring questions in the MCU is how did Thanos already know Tony Stark/Iron Man? While many fans thoughts that Thanos’ knowledge of Iron Man comes from the battle of New York in 2012’s Avengers, a new fan theory hints that Thanos’ knowledge comes via something else.
Did Thanos Already Knew Iron Man
In Infinity War, Thanos recognizes Iron Man quickly and when asked, he says that he’s also cursed with knowledge. This is what Reddit user atradayse points out saying that this knowledge is the root of things, especially that Mad Titan knows Iron Man because of how peculiar he is.

What the theory says:
The theory reveals why the idea that Thanos might know Tony, thanks to the Avengers doesn’t hold its ground. The prime points are that Thanos sends people to complete all his dirty work. In Avengers, it was Loki and Chitauri. While Thanos may have gotten the details of the battle, it doesn’t explain his knowledge of Iron Man. The theory further states that Thanos isn’t familiar with Peter Quill, someone who held the Power Stone briefly and is the son of a Celestial. Quill only comes up as a boyfriend who kept her promise to Gamora.
The theory comes to Stark being special, pointing out to a moment in Iron Man where Obadiah Stane asks Stark Industry to build an arc reactor like Tony’s. They claim it’s not possible and then when told Tony completed it in a cave, they say, “I’m not Tony Stark.”

What’s the takeaway? Tony is an anomaly, even amongst the very intelligent. He’s peculiar and intellectual which makes him extremely powerful. In the theory, its this uniqueness and after New York, he understood and recognized his will to use his powers no matter what it costs him.

The theory further suggests that this is why Doctor Strange gave up the time stone to save Iron Man from Thanos. Iron Man is important when it comes to saving the world. It could also suggest that it will be Tony himself who resolves the whole issue of running out of air. Tony has survived in such circumstances before we are sure he will do it again in Avengers: Endgame.
With Avengers: Endgame being the end of the story arc that began in Iron Man, it would all make an intriguing call back to how it began.
