James Gunn’s casting spree for Supergirl has been making headlines ever since he announced the revamp of the entire DC universe. After Zack Snyder, Gunn seems to hold the reigns and decide the future of DC movies. This has been done in an attempt to regain the audiences who were lost after a few failed projects. Gunn found the next Superman in David Corenswet who will be seen in the upcoming Superman: Legacy movie.

After an intense casting call leading to two finalists, House of the Dragon fame Milly Alcock has been cast as Supergirl in James Gunn’s revamped DC universe. The frontrunners of the race have been in the spotlight for quite some time as fans speculated and wanted to see who would finally bag the role. Incredible fan art featuring the two actresses in the Supergirl suit also went viral.

We finally have an answer to the casting question. However, the second frontrunner to be Supergirl, Meg Donnelly, might still have a chance to be a part of the DC universe. Given Nicholas Hoult was the second choice for Superman and ended up being cast as Lex Luthor by Gunn, there is still a sliver of hope for Donnelly to land a role in other DC movies. Moreover, Donnelly is aware of the world of Superman since she voiced Supergirl in Tomorrowverse, an animated series by DC.

Supergirl will make her debut in Gunn’s DC universe with Superman: Legacy while her first solo movie will the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Even though Gunn claims to make a lighter, less serious version of the DC characters, Supergirl might just be less cheerful because of her lonesome childhood.

The makers of the animated movie Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One supported Meg Donnelly being cast as Supergirl in the rebooted DC universe. The movie’s director Jeff Wamester and executive producers Butch Lukic and Jim Krieg spoke to ComicBookMovie.com about the release of the animated flick and Gunn’s choice for the superhero casting. When asked how they felt about Donnelly auditioning for a role in the DCU, they said,

“She would be great. You know, when she was in Legion, she had that speech at the end with her mom and we were in the booth saying, ‘Oh my God. That was such a good performance!’ She had one movie to make you fall in love with Kara. You’ve got to care about Kara when you get to Crisis. That’s why Legion exists to introduce Kara and, also, when do you get to see the Legion? If we had a couple more movies, we could have had Supergirl in before we get to Crisis, it would have been good. Ultimately, I think it’s all worked out. Centrally, she is part of Crisis on Infinite Earths and, in part two, she definitely gets a bigger role in the movie than in the first one.”

The animated movie follows an antimatter armageddon that threatens to explode the universe, leaving nothing behind. The Monitor gathers a team of superheroes to stop this destructive force from wreaking havoc. It was released on January 9, 2024, on digital and Ultra HD Blu-ray, and Blu-ray was released on January 23, 2024.
