Lily Collins, a talented actress known for her roles in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and Emily in Paris, had a rough patch with less-than-stellar reviewed movies lately. But there is still hope on the horizon! Her upcoming role in the horror film MaXXXine might just be the project she needs to break that cycle.

The film is set in 1980s Hollywood, where Maxine Minx (an adult film star trying to break into mainstream acting) lands her big chance. But when a mysterious killer starts targeting young actresses in Los Angeles, Maxine’s own secrets threaten to come up. This put everything she’s worked for at risk.

If you take a peek at Lily Collins‘ list of movies, you might notice a pattern. Many of the films she starred in from 2019 to 2023 didn’t quite hit the mark with critics, according to Rotten Tomatoes. Take Windfall, a thriller from 2022, which only scored a so-so 58%.

Then there’s Inheritance, from 202o, which fared even worse with a mere 23% rating. Tolkien also got a dismal 51% rating. Even her role in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile in 2019, where she played Ted Bundy’s girlfriend, couldn’t quite charm the critics only scoring a modest 54%.

However, MaXXXine could be the movie that could change Collins’ luck. In the movie, the 35-year-old will play the role of Molly Bennett. It’s the last chapter in a scary movie trilogy written and directed by Ti West. The first one, X, released in 2022, was critically acclaimed. It scored a high 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. The prequel, Pearl, also released in 2022, was equally well-received with a score of 92%. These positive reviews bode well for MaXXXine, too.

MaXXXine is Set to Be a Hit Beyond Predecessors’ Success

Beyond the success of the previous films in the trilogy, there are other reasons to believe MaXXXine will be a hit. The cast is packed with star power, including Mia Goth, returning as Maxine from the first two films, veteran actors Kevin Bacon and Michelle Monaghan, and singers Halsey and Moses Sumney. Even the trailer (via A24 on YouTube) teases a mix of suspense and scary moments  a formula that’s worked before.

With a gripping plot, a star-studded cast, and the buzz from the hit films before it, MaXXXine looks set to be a big win. For actress Lily Collins, this horror flick could be just what she needs to turn things around after a string of movies that didn’t impress critics.

MaXXXine is set to release on July 5th!

Both prior installments were well received by critics. X, released in 2022, scored 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, while its prequel Pearl, also released in 2022, scored 92%.
