While fans mostly talk about the best or the strongest, isn’t it equally interesting to know who some of the most disappointing anime villains are, despite being part of popular franchises? These are the kind of villains who initially seemed to pose a great threat but later turned out to be far more incompetent.
After scouring across all the anime, here we’ve picked 10 anime villains who didn’t live up to their initial hype at all and ranked them from least to most disappointing. So, without further ado, let’s dive right in, shall we?
10. Jadeite – Sailor Moon
Sailor Moon is revered as one of the classic ’90s anime, boasting its lovable cast of characters. But still, we can’t overlook how mediocre Jadeite felt as the series’ primary villain. It’s not like he’s a terrible villain, but compared to the others on the list, he feels the most generic. As the first Dark Kingdom General, he simply introduced the conflict before being quickly replaced. That’s all. But because Jadeite was never really built up to be this grand villain, the disappointment level is low, resulting in him ranking at the bottom.
9. Foxy the Silver Fox – One Piece
Though Foxy was supposed to be a comedic antagonist, the disappointment came through because he played a vital role in the Davy Back Fight arc, which came right after one of the most emotional arcs in the anime. The main disappointment was that the Davy Back Fight was dragged on for too long. Foxy became more annoying than terrifying, or even funny. But because he was never meant to be a serious villain in One Piece, Foxy the Silver Fox ranks only 9th on the list. It was very much within expectations.
8. Genthru aka The Bomber – Hunter × Hunter
The looks paired with flashy abilities made Genthru seem like he could easily become a great villain. In fact, at the start of the Greed Island arc, he seemed quite lethal and also had this mysterious aura surrounding him. But unfortunately, we later got to know that he was nothing more than a fairly straightforward criminal with little personality or depth. While his Nen ability, and especially his fight against Gon, was excellent, his lack of complexity compared to other Hunter × Hunter villains makes him rank only 8th.
7. Hyoga Akatsuki – Dr. Stone
Another villain who was promised to become the MC’s biggest hurdle turned into another conventional character who fell short of expectations. Though Hyoga was intelligent and physically strong, he never really got to rival Senku on equal terms. After his motives were revealed, he didn’t stay the same mysterious character with contrasting ideologies anymore. He became just another friendly neighborhood villain. Thus, he deserves the 7th spot because the disappointment was real.
6. Jason – Tokyo Ghoul
Jason’s introduction in Tokyo Ghoul is arguably one of the most aura-filled moments in all of anime. As a ruthless villain, pushing Kaneki through one of anime’s most unforgettable torture sequences, he appeared to be someone who could become a great long-term villain. But as soon as fans’ hopes were built up, they quickly dissipated, as Kaneki soon made a joke out of Jason and killed him on the spot. But because the disappointment came almost instantaneously, Jason claims the 6th spot on the list.
5. Akaza – Demon Slayer
A good villain never really strays from their ideology, but Akaza? Near the end of his character arc in Demon Slayer, even he was given a sad backstory only to force fans to empathize with his character. But this only backfired. While the backstory was impactful and Akaza did commit serious crimes, such as killing Rengoku, the disappointment was inexplicable when the narrative tried to justify his actions. Therefore, he easily claims a spot in the top 5 of the list.
4. All For One – My Hero Academia
Visually and aesthetically, All For One appears to be an extremely cool villain. But his overly straightforward villain ideology became a great disappointment. All he cared about was overthrowing hero society like most comic book villains. Initially, he even possessed an intimidating aura, but near the final arc of the anime, All For One increasingly started acting arrogant and comical. Shigaraki was a much better villain than him. That’s why All For One deserves the 4th place here.
3. Aura – Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
The anime long hyped the Demon Generals, and Aura’s name came up multiple times in the storyline. But when the decisive moment came, as Frieren marched to face Aura and her undead army head-on, the battle was over within a jiffy. All that aura (pun intended) went whoosh against Frieren’s intimidating mana output. The fact that, after all the build-up, the Aura crisis was resolved quicker than one could ever imagine puts her in the top 3 of the most disappointing anime villains of all time.
2. Kaguya Otsutsuki – Naruto: Shippuden
Kaguya literally robbed Madara. While it was obvious that Madara was built up to become the ultimate antagonist in Naruto: Shippuden, Kaguya came out of nowhere and snatched that title. This left fans absolutely disappointed, making her more than deserving of the #2 rank on the list. While Kaguya’s introduction did expand the lore, it took time for fans to digest the fact that their next big villain was an alien. To this day, Kaguya’s existence sticks out like a sore thumb in the anime.
1. Zeref Dragneel – Fairy Tail
Years of build-up and episodes of anticipation led to Zeref disappointing the fanbase, which is simply outrageous. So, he deserves the #1 spot as the most disappointing anime villain of all time. Imagine being a legendary wizard who shaped the fate of the entire world of the anime, only to be sidelined and resolved simply through an emotional argument. This felt unacceptable. Even his fight scenes paled in comparison to many other fights in the anime, which only solidifies Zeref’s notoriety.
