‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ Showrunner Has “Really Cool, Big Ideas” For Donald Glover Series Season 2 After Cruel Cliffhanger Ending
When it was announced that Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane were going to give a makeover to Brangelina’s 2005 classic Mr. & Mrs. Smith, one cannot say fans were not a bit skeptical. They were well aware of Hollywood’s track record of dissecting classics and turning them into something that makes Don Corleone say, “Look how they massacred my boy.” However, what these two did with this epic spy romance is nothing short of fantastic.
Starring Glover himself and Maya Erskine, this eight-episode series recently came to an end and the cruel cliffhanger left fans with their hearts in their mouths. However, recently, co-creator Francesca Sloane provided an update for the show that brought back the faith of God in the audience.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith Showrunner Has Some Really Important Update About Season 2 Already
The tension-filled, heartwarming, and emotional series follows two recently stranger-turned-spies who have to pose as a married couple while working for a secret agency. One sees not only the evolution of their skill with high-risk missions all around the globe but also their evolving relationship that is humor-filled, complex, and dangerous. The audience would definitely cry fat tears if this season was the end of the journey of this eccentric couple.
Showrunner Francesca Sloane recently sat down with The Direct and, in an exclusive interview, gave some hope for season 2. Although nothing is set in stone yet, as season 2 has not been confirmed by Amazon Studios, she did mention that they have “really cool, big ideas” for the show:
“I think that we always wrote Season 1 as a complete film. We’re very happy with the way that we wrapped it up and with the ending, even with the ending being what it is. With that said, yeah, we have some “really cool, big ideas” for season 2. So, should the opportunity present itself, we will definitely go down that road. And we will make it even cooler than Season 1 if people will give us a chance.”

Beforehand, EW talked to Sloane after the premiere of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, where she said the show definitely has more to tell, so all hope is not lost yet.
“I think that there’s definitely a lot more story to tell here. And I think that we definitely feel like this is a fully satisfied story if it were to just live on its own. But it definitely has more legs to keep going, that’s for sure.”
With an open ending such as the one Mr. & Mrs. Smith have, the audience would be really bummed if there was not a second season of the show. Hopefully, Amazon Studios will not make the audience wait too long in the latitudes of longing before it brings on the second season.
Will Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2 Happen?
There has not been any official news yet as to whether the show will be renewed for a second season. Usually, a show is renewed after seeing its viewership during its first few weeks on the platform. However, given its past record, commercial success has never been the driving factor for the franchise.
The original movie was a huge hit, earning $487.3 million for its $110 million budget and becoming the seventh highest-grossing movie of the year worldwide. However, despite Hollywood’s trend of jumping into making a sequel of anything substantially profitable, a sequel never came to fruition. The show is the only successor to the movie in any way, in nearly two decades.
However, given the previously mentioned comments by the showrunners themselves, fans can hope that this time things will be different and the show will carry on.
