Netflix Just Canceled a Comedy Show for Becoming Too Political
- Netflix has canceled yet another show and this time around, it is a comedy one.
- The show Unstable has been canceled after two seasons because of the political aspects about to be introduced.
- Rob Lowe's son and co-star, John Owen Lowe has given a nod to the meta-ness of the show's premise.
Netflix has added yet another show to the long list of shows that it has canceled in the past couple of years. The reason behind the cancelation of the comedy show, Unstable, seems to be the fact that the might have been on its way to become a little too political, or perhaps a little too meta for the streaming platform.
The show saw Rob Lowe and his real-life son, John Owen Lowe, portraying a father-son duo. The actors have confirmed that it is somewhat reflective of their real-life interpersonal relationship. Things seemed to be going well with the second season having been released in August, but a third season will not be made because of the political themes in it.
Netflix Has Canceled Unstable Because of the Political Themes It Was Going to Introduce
Unstable follows the story of Ellis Dragon (Rob Lowe), the CEO and founder of a biotechnology company who begins to struggle mentally after the passing of his wife. His estranged son, Jackson Dragon (John Own Lowe) leaves behind his career of playing a flute to join his father’s company. Jackson not only helps his father with his company, but also helps him cope with his mental struggles.
Netflix, being an independent company, obviously finds little to no resistance when it comes to canceling shows if and when the need arises. The need to cancel this particular show seems to have arisen from the fact that the second season ended with Ellis choosing to leave his company and running for the President of the United States.
If you think that it sounds reminiscent of something you have seen or heard before, you are right because it is the same way Donald Trump rose to great heights as a politician. No wonder, Variety has recently revealed that Netflix has canceled the show after two seasons.
The show was also executive-produced by Lowes. It also starred Sian Clifford, Aaron Branch, Emma Pilar Ferreira, Rachel Marsh, Tom Allen, and several others. Victor Fresco (Mad About You) was also executive producing alongside the Lowes.
John Owen Lowe Confirms Everyone’s Biggest Suspicions About the Show
By the end of Season 2 of Unstable, Ellis truly did go full-on Donald Trump, starting a “school” and following it up with the announcement of his candidacy for president. The Lowes have done nothing to diffuse the rumors. If anything, John Owen Lowe has only fueled those rumors in his conversation with TVLine.
Why not pull from some of the most hilarious things that have happened in the zeitgeist over the past few years? I also just genuinely believe that this is something Ellis would do, and it makes us laugh so hard. If you’re drawing comparisons to real life, you’re probably not wrong.
If viewers thought it was a fantasy of Ellis’ that would pass, Rob Lowe has confirmed that it was, in fact, not the case. People might assume that it was unlikely that someone like Ellis could win the election, but Lowe believed that it was possible. He said that he had seen many people, who seemed to have no chance of winning the election, become presidents. Considering this scenario, Lowe insists it would have been an exciting premise to explore.
Unstable is available for streaming on Netflix.
