OceanGate Submersible tragedy is trending everywhere. The unfortunate incident made headlines around the world. The Coast Guard stated that they had located around five major pieces of the Titan Submersible around the debris of the Titanic wreckage site, which indicated the possibility of “catastrophic implosion due to the loss of the pressure chamber”.

There were three paying members on board, a pilot, and a content specialist aboard the OceanGate submersible. Each dive lasted roughly around eight hours and descends to a depth of 3,800m (12,500 ft). The OceanGate Titan submarine’s tickets cost $250,000. The unfortunate incident made Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate set new records.

OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush Creates A New Record

The OceanGate founder Stockton Rush’s name has been put on the list of inventors that were killed by their own inventions on Wikipedia. Now Stockton Rush would be remembered as- pilot, engineer, and businessman who oversaw the design and construction of the OceanGate submersible Titan, intended to take tourists to view the wreck of the Titanic. The 61-year-old OceanGate CEO was one of five passengers who died on the Titan submersible. The submersible went missing on June 18 on the way to the Titanic expedition to the historic underwater wreckage site.

Stockton Rush was accompanied by the British businessman Hamish Harding, French diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet and Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood. Recently, during a press conference, U.S. Coast Guard officials announced that all the passengers in the submersible were presumed dead. This was concluded after a remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) named Horizon Arctic, from the Canadian vessel found pieces of the missing sub near the wreckage site of Titanic.

Paul-Henri Nargeolet’s friend, Fred Hagen, spoke to the media outlet People and went on to reveal that Stockton Rush had created the Titan “to explore the deepest depths” of the ocean, and as well as “he wanted to democratize the sea and open it up to individuals.”

During an interview at Princeton University, OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush said that his obsession with the Titanic was based on a “wealth of information waiting to be discovered.”

While talking about the treasures on the wrecked ships, Stockton Rush also pointed out that-

“There’s not a lot of data on how these ships decay. There are thousands of shipwrecks worldwide that sank with over 500,000 gallons of toxic substances, typically fuel oil, part of what we do is get people to appreciate that most of human history is underwater.”

On mentioning the archeological point of you, the late OceanGate CEO had spoken about how these undiscovered sites are full of great things that should be brought onto the surface. He had said-

“If you think about it from an archeological perspective, if you had a caravan of precious items — records, books, gold, or whatever — and you were snowed in on the passes of Mongolia, all that stuff got stolen, pillaged. If you were in a ship carrying King Herod’s possessions to Rome and you sank, [it’s] still there.”

The OceanGate’s Titan submersible’s catastrophic implosion has rocked the world. People around the world are talking about the credibility of OceanGate. According to NBC News, OceanGate Expeditions had started their trips to the Titanic wreckage site in 2021 and as of now, they had only made two previous trips before June 18, 2023.

James Cameron On The OceanGate’s Titan Submersible Tragedy

James Cameron made multiple trips to the Titanic wreckage site when he was filming the Academy Award-winning movie. The director was devastated by the unfortunate Titan submersible tragedy after it imploded in the North Atlantic Ocean.

During a recent interview with ABC News, Titanic director James Cameron spoke about the incident and even compared the catastrophic implosion of the Titan submersible and the sinking of Titanic, he said-

“A number of the top players in the deep submergence engineering community, even wrote letters to the company, saying that what they were doing was too experimental to carry passengers and that it needed to be certified. I’m struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship, and yet he steamed at full speed into an ice field on a moonless night, and many people died as a result.”

He even threw light on the tragic consequences of not paying attention to the warnings that come along with this kind of expedition. The director said-

‘For us, it’s a very similar tragedy where warnings went unheeded. To take place at the same exact site with all the diving that’s going on all around the world, I think it’s just astonishing. It’s really quite surreal.”

However, the negligence of warning signs and lack of safety measures are bound to have negative consequences on expeditions like this. This incident has raised a big question on the safety precautions followed by deep sea expedition organizations around the world.
