One Casting Decision Could Make ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ the Best Game of Thrones Spin-off Despite House of the Dragon’s Glory
Post the recent premiere of the second season of the Game of Thrones (GoT) prequel series House of the Dragon (HotD), fans have another reason to celebrate as the spin-off series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has got an exciting new update.
The show has begun filming and features an ensemble star cast. In fact, one of the cast members is so good at what they do that the upcoming series could even leave behind HotD, which is undoubtedly one of the most beloved fantasy series at the moment. This actor is none other than Bertie Carvel.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Might Turn Out to Be Better than House of the Dragon
Game of Thrones, based on George R.R. Martin’s novel series A Song of Ice and Fire, was nothing short of a cultural phenomenon with eight seasons aired between April 2011 and May 2019. However, fans did not seem to have gotten enough of the royal family members battling over the Iron Throne. Luckily for them, the House of the Dragon‘s first season premiered in 2022.
Much to the delight of the fans, the second season of HotD premiered on June 16, 2024, and it turns out that fans of Martin’s fantasy continent Westeros have another reason to celebrate as Variety has recently reported that the spin-off series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has begun filming in Belfast, Ireland.
Set in a timeline that is 100 years before the events GoT and 100 years after the events of HotD, the series will follow the knight Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his young squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) on their adventures. A part of their adventures will be a competition where they will encounter several members of the Targaryen royal family.
One of these members will be Prince Baelor Targaryen, portrayed by Bertie Carvel. For those unversed, he did a phenomenal job at playing former Prime Minister Tony Blair in the fifth and sixth seasons of the hit Netflix series The Crown, starring the likes of Elizabeth Debicki and Imelda Staunton. Not to mention that he has won the Laurence Olivier Award twice. That said, this series might turn out to be even better than HotD, thanks to Carvel.
What Else Is Known About A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?
Apart from Carvel, other actors starring in the series are Finn Bennett (Prince Aerion Targaryen), Peter Claffey (Ser Duncan the Tall), Tanzyn Crawford (puppeteer Tanselle), Daniel Ings (knight Ser Lyonel Baratheon), Dexter Sol Ansell (Egg), and Sam Spruell (Prince Maekar Targaryen).
Sarah Adina Smith (Lessons in Chemistry) will be directing three of the six episodes for Season 1, and executive producer Owen Harris will direct the rest three. Besides Harris, the series, adapted from Martin’s novella The Hedge Knight, will be executive produced by Ryan Condal, Vince Gerardis, and Sarah Bradshaw. Additionally, Martin and Ira Parker (The Sympathizer) will write and executive produce.
House of the Dragon is available for streaming on Max.
