One Piece: Luffy’s Gear 5 Looking ‘Cartoonish’ isn’t Surprising After Eiichiro Oda Revealed His Favorite Villain from the Series (& That’s Not Kaido)
Shonen animes would be incomplete without villains and every anime series has iconic villains. Dragon Ball has Majin Buu and Frieza, while Bleach has the likes of Aizen. Similarly, there is Madara for Naruto. For One Piece, there are a lot of villains to choose from since the show has been running for a long time. From Akainu to Marshall D. Teach, Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates have faced numerous villains that could give them a run for their money (or Berries).
Fans have their favorite villains to choose from an endless array: there’s Crocodile, Kaido, Big Mom, and more. However, Eiichiro Oda, the creator of the One Piece series, has a rather unusual choice when it comes to the series’ best villain. In his past interview with Shonen Jump, Oda revealed his favorite villain and left fans in shock. Well, to be honest, it is not a typical response. Though, Oda has mentioned time and again that his top villain is none other than Buggy the Clown.
Buggy the Clown Is Eiichiro Oda’s Top Villain
It is interesting to say the least that Oda considers Buggy the Clown as his favorite villain when there is a litany of other fearsome villains. In case you need a run-down on Buggy, he is the colorful captain of the Buggy Pirates. The main antagonist of the ‘Orange Town’ arc, Buggy has dipped in and out of the series for years now. A former member of the Roger Pirate along with Shanks, Buggy left the crew to start his own band of sea-faring thieves.
It is easy to recognize Buggy with his untamed blue hair and a big red button nose. While the pirate poses some amount of danger, it is neutralized by his series of gag jokes and dumb moves. His run-ins with Luffy result in his loss again and again, and although he has sustained enough losses by now, that doesn’t diminish his wish to win a battle against the Straw Hat captain. Buggy ate the Bara Bara no Mi devil fruit, which allows him to separate his body parts and use them accordingly.
What Role Does Buggy Play In The Series?
The fact that Oda chose Buggy over all the other dangerous villains shows that Buggy is different from the rest. Buggy is a recurring character in One Piece, and part of the reason behind his appearance must be because he has earned Oda’s favor. Although Buggy started off as a villain, he later became a side character and more of a comic relief.
Meanwhile, Oda is not afraid to display his love for Buggy, the loveable villain. Even though he gets scared easily, Buggy has always had it easy. Currently, he is one of the five Yonkos in the One Piece world, with Crocodile and Dracule Mihawk as part of his pirate crew, though only in name. Despite having lost every battle so far against the Straw Hat captain, it is his deepest desire to win a battle against Luffy.
