“People have a preconception”: Not Luffy, Eiichiro Oda’s Pirate with an Eye Patch May be the Most Mysterious One Piece Character
When people think of a pirate, they usually picture someone with an eyepatch, a hook for a hand or leg, and a bandana on their head. The world has made a preconception that pirates should look like this.
But surprisingly, in manga like One Piece, which is all about pirates, the creator Eiichiro Oda hasn’t designed such a character that fits this classic image. However, it seems like the time has come when Oda draws such a character.
A Pirate With an Eye Patch in One Piece
In an interview, Eiichiro Oda teased that a pirate with an eye patch will be introduced in the final phase of One Piece. He was eagerly waiting to draw this character soon. Even though many people might assume that pirates often wear eye patches, Oda has never drawn any pirate with it.
“A pirate with an eye-patch will appear in the final phase of one piece. I’m itching to draw that character as soon as possible. maybe people have a preconception that many pirates wear eye patches, but actually, I’ve never drawn any pirates with eye patches.”
If we look back, there isn’t a character in One Piece that wears an eye patch. Even Black Beard, who resembles the most as a typical pirate doesn’t have an eye patch. It seems like Oda is holding himself back from drawing this character, as he wants to save it for the final phase of the story.
Since now the manga is in the final saga, fans are waiting to see who this character might be. The way Oda has put this seems like this character might play a major role in the story.
Who Might be the Character Oda is Talking About?
Spoiler Alert! In One Piece chapter 1114, Vegapunk reveals that the first person ever to be referred to as a pirate is none other than Joyboy. This was a huge reveal made by Oda, as fans have been thinking of Nika and Joyboy being the same person.
After Vegapunk revealed this, fans began speculating that Joyboy might indeed be the pirate with the eye patch mentioned by Oda in his interview, given the clues pointing toward him.
Joyboy, a character teased for a long time, being referred to as the first-ever pirate with an eye patch would be an exciting and strategic decision by Oda.
Now that Vegapunk has started talking about Joyboy, we may see glimpses of him in the flashback story, which may finally reveal his appearance. This will show if Joyboy is really the character that Oda teased in his interview.
