Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, the sequel to 2011’s Puss in Boot, has been one of the biggest films from the Dreamworks studios. The film came out at the end of last year and was the biggest hit at the box office. After the major failure of Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, the sequel film has been a success at the box office.

Ruby Gillman represents the negative aspects of success for the major studio, giving Dreamworks it’s worst opening in the company’s nearly 30-year history. However, Puss in Boot 2 has managed to cover the $70 million budget of disastrous box office performance by Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.

The film struggled mightily at the box office and just managed a total gross of $12.8 million. Ruby Gillman, only made up 18% of its enormous $70 million budget. In comparison, the 2022 sequel of Puss in Boot by the studios outperformed it by a huge margin, earning $480.9 million worldwide on a budget that was only $20 million higher.

It puts sequel animations at the forefront of commercial possibilities and also demonstrates that not every modern animated film, such as Ruby Gillman’s Teenage Kraken from 2023, is a surefire success.

Puss in Boots 2 provides insight into the winning strategy and how the studios should presumably act in the future.
