Since 2008, Downey’s Tony Stark has captured the hearts of countless fans all over the world. The hero’s sacrifice that took place in the climax of Avengers: Endgame may have brought an end to his character, but his legacy prospers. Robert Downey Jr. continues to prosper in the film industry, nabbing trophies and acclaims for his work.

The actor now holds the People’s Choice Award for Male Movie Star of 2019. Given his heart-twisting scene in the final scenes of Endgame, it makes sense there would be well-deserved praise given to the actor. Marvel fans still struggle with coming to terms that Tony Stark is no more. However, Downey’s departure from the multi-billion dollar franchise has the studio treading into unknown waters. However, departure or not, Downey’s acceptance speech was a testament to how thankful he was to be given the opportunity to reach the hearts of millions.

“Well look, I just got to come up here and open the show so I’ll just say thank you Disney, thank you Marvel, thank you Russo brothers,” Robert Downey Jr. spoke after receiving his award. “And most of all, to the late, great Stan Lee, this is for you, buddy.”

Earlier, during the event, Robert Downey Jr. joked that he had made a suggestion for his final line as Iron Man. Before it was “I am Iron Man,” Downey suggested that he say the words “Oh, snap!” as he dusted Thanos and his army to oblivion. The final words of Iron Man became a monumental dialogue, rippling numerous feelings throughout the audience. According to Joe Russo, the line was actually a last minute addition to what was previously a silent scene.
