He said, “I went to a screening of ‘Deadpool.’ I was 20 minutes in, and I was like, ‘Ah, damn it!’ All I kept seeing in my head was ‘48 Hours’ with Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy. So it’s been brewing for a long time. It just took me longer to get here.”

Jackman continued to explain that during a trip to the beach with his family, he had decided that he would reprise the character and called up Ryan Reynolds. He noted,

“I think, actually, he’d given up. I think it was a big shock to him. There was a massive pause, and then he said, ‘I can’t believe the timing of this.’”

Fox released the first two Deadpool movies but after Disney acquired it, the actor had the chance to meet Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. It opened the gate for Deadpool to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ryan Reynolds stated,

“I got Kevin to talk about what, if anything, the future holds for Deadpool in that transaction. The subject was coming up in the meeting about whether we could find a way to do a Deadpool-Wolverine pairing. It wasn’t possible then. For this to be happening now is pretty damn exciting.”

Hugh Jackman explains Wolverine‘s appearance in Deadpool 3’s timeline

Back in 2022, Hugh Jackman mentioned in an interview with SiriusXM about how he was cautious of not messing up the timelines with Logan and explained,

“All because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines now, we can go back because it’s ‘science’. And so I don’t have to screw with the Logan timeline, which was important to me, and I think probably to the fans, too.”

In 2017’s Logan, Wolverine dies following a brutal fight, so when the actor, alongside Ryan Reynolds, announced that he was going to reprise the character, fans were excited but also needed answers about how he’d fit in the timeline. Reynolds, who seemed excited for the two of them to work together, also mentioned while appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, that they are cautious about protecting the legacy of Logan.

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have confirmed that they are going to protect Logan’s legacy

“We’ve figured out a way to do it that’s Hugh Jackman-approved and [Marvel Studios boss] Kevin Feige-approved, where we’re completely protecting the legacy of Logan the way it was left off. I wouldn’t mess with that. I’m really excited.”

Reynolds also noted that he feels lucky that he can work in the industry, particularly in a movie, but he really wants to work with people who are talented or people he is best friends with, but added jokingly that Hugh Jackman qualifies for none but he is excited because he is a fan of Logan.

The release date for Deadpool 3 which was scheduled for 3rd May 2024 release has now been delayed since it was recently taken off the chart from Disney’s upcoming theatrical release that showcased the movies being released from September 2023 to June 2024. The new date has not been announced yet.
