There have been many unexpected twists in the Secret Invasion Disney+ series. The series centers around, The Skrulls, an alien race with shape-changing abilities, as they covertly take over Earth. They intend to take over the world by disguising themselves as some of our favorite Marvel superheroes.

The fourth episode of the series revealed Rhodey has been replaced by a shape-shifting Skrull. These gave rise to the curiosity of exactly when War Machine was replaced. However, the final episode has made a tragic revelation surrounding Rhodey and Robert Downey Jr‘s Iron Man.

The final episode of Secret Invasion finally revealed exactly how long in the MCU the real Rhodey had been out of commission. It is believed that the real War Machine was replaced nine years before the events of Marvel’s Secret Invasion. The episode confirms that Rhodey has been substituted with a Skrull imposter ever since the occurrences of the Civil War.

This revelation that Rhodes’ War Machine was essentially a shape-shifting alien for nearly a decade in the MCU has enormous implications. It means Rhodey missed out on the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. It also unravels that the real Rhodey more than likely has no idea that his best friend, Iron Man, sacrificed himself to save the world from Thanos and the Mad Titan’s army.

The final episode revelation has caused a plot hole in Robert Downey Jr‘s Iron Man as Tony Stark’s best friend was robbed of the opportunity to mourn his death and is still unaware of the same.

The Secret Invasion revelation of this sad turn has made Rhodey’s next Armour Wars film much more fascinating. It will surely need to explore the complicated feelings that War Machine will be experiencing after he catches up on everything he missed while a Skrull hostage.

James Rhodey initially appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in the first Iron Man movie, played by Terrence Howard. The character was then taken by Don Cheadle for Iron Man 2, and he has been playing it for more than 10 years. Rhodey was a close buddy of Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark and worked as a military liaison for Stark Industries.

In Secret Invasion it was discovered that the Skrull named Raava had been impersonating Rhodes for some time. The final episode revealed Rhodey is missing since Captain America: Civil War, as Raava has taken over.

This revelation leads to the real Rhodes being in the dark about the five-year blip and Iron Man’s passing in Avengers: Endgame, as he gave his life to use the Infinity Stones to destroy Thanos and the army of the Mad Titan.

The Skrull impostor appeared as Rhodey at the funeral of Iron Man in the 2019 movie. Therefore it is highly unlikely that the actual Rhodey is aware that his best buddy passed away or that there was a burial.

Secret Invasion is available to stream on Disney+.
