Ms. Marvel’s first official trailer is out, and with it has come outrage from fans. This time, viewers are concerned over a big alteration in the forthcoming Disney Plus show, specifically since Kamala Khan’s superpowers seem to have been altered. Here’s Iman Vellani’s response to this backlash:

While many supporters are still thrilled about the series, Ms. Marvel does make a significant change to the character’s abilities from the comics, which others have criticized. The protagonist in the original comics has the power to “embiggen,” which involves the capacity to enlarge and stretch all of her limbs, as well as extraordinary healing powers. However, in the show, Kamala has energy-based abilities, which appear to be derived from a metal bracelet. During an action sequence in the teaser, Kamala sports an enormous purple fist, indicating that at least one part of the character’s abilities would remain similar to the original material.

With such a significant shift, it’s understandable that fans have gone crazy and generated a lot of criticism. Both, the actors and the crew have now expressed their thoughts on the issue. Ms. Marvel actor Iman Vellani addressed the outrage many fans have been experiencing as a result of the huge shift in an interview with SFX Magazine. The actress defended the major adjustment in superpowers, stating that she believes they remained close to the comics. “I’m very possessive [of Kamala],” she says. “I think we stay true to what the comics brought. The themes have always been about identity and about marrying the 50 million things that make Kamala. For all I care, she could shoot sausages out of her fingers, as long as she still goes on that self-discovery journey”.

Sana Amant, co-creator of the Ms. Marvel superhero, told fans in an interview with Games Radar that the superpowers are employed in a very similar fashion to the comics. “I think the essence of the messaging is all there, we’re just manifesting it in a different way with the powers themselves, the ‘embiggen’ fists are still there. The way that her powers are comported and used are very, very similar to the overall look in the comics. I think people will be satisfied. I don’t think there’s any powers that look like this that are out there. And they do look weird and wonky,’ she laughs”.

Furthermore, Ms. Marvel showrunner Bisha K. Ali stated that this role is loved by all the writers, producers, and cast: “All the writers involved in this, all the directors, and all the cast feel this love for this character, and beyond just the character, we know what this show means. We know. I know. I’ve been hunting for this my entire life”.
