Shōgun is based on the 1975 novel by James Clavell and dives into the life of Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), a real Japanese leader who helped reunify Japan in the 1600s. The show follows the story of an English sailor who gets shipwrecked and has to figure out how to survive and fit into a new land and culture.

We know that Shōgun made waves by being the first Japanese-language series to snag a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Drama Series. It’s also one of the rare non-English shows to get such a nod—pretty awesome!

But this isn’t the only major category for the show. There are other categories as well where Shōgun is aiming to win at the upcoming Emmys! Check them out here:

  • Lead Actor in a Drama Series – Hiroyuki Sanada

After the smashing success of Shōgun, everyone’s wondering: will we see a Season 2? So, what’s the scoop on the upcoming seasons? According to The Hollywood Reporter, the good news is that a second and third season are officially on the way.

The creators, Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, are already on the case. Kondo admitted that they’re in “creative chaos,” trying to figure out what happens next since Season 1 covered the whole book. As he told the outlet:

It’s been exciting and nerve-wracking because, obviously, this is uncharted territory. We don’t have a roadmap, we just have history.

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards are set to air this Sunday at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC. If you miss the live show, don’t worry—you can catch all the action on Hulu the next day!

Shōgun is available to watch on Disney+.
