Emma Stone became a household name in Hollywood after her breakthrough role in 2010’s Easy A. From portraying the villain Cruella de Vil in Disney’s 2021 live-action adaptation of the origins of the character from 1996’s 101 Dalmatians in Cruella to recording six songs for Damien Chazelle’s 2016 musical drama La La Land, the actress has left no stone unturned.

Since the onset of her acting career in 2004, Emma Stone has explored many genres of movies and has performed phenomenally well in all of them. In 2012, she became a part of the superhero genre with her portrayal of Spider-Man’s love interest Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man. However, it turns out that she was offered a role in another superhero movie that she turned down.

Emma Stone Turned Down A Role In A Major Marvel Movie

Emma Stone has starred in numerous blockbusters but it cannot be ignored that she has turned down a significant number of roles over the years. While some of these roles could have really helped her career, others could have served as setbacks such as the role of the villain Cheetah in Wonder Woman 1984. The third installment of this DC franchise was canceled owing to the poor performance of the movie offered to Stone.

Later, it was revealed that Emma Stone was also reportedly offered the role of Hope van Dyne, one of the leading characters in the 2015 Marvel superhero movie Ant-Man. The actress declined the offer and it went to Evangeline Lilly who played the role of Hope, daughter of physicist and former S.H.I.E.L.D. member and scientist, Hank Pym (portrayed by Michael Douglas).

Directed by Peyton Reed, Ant-Man starred Paul Rudd in the titular role. It became one of the highest-grossing movies of the year with a worldwide total of $518 million, and was praised by critics for not just the cast but also the humor and visual effects that apparently played a huge role in the movie’s overall success.

As mentioned earlier, Emma Stone has turned down some very significant roles in favor of starring in other movies. By 2011, she had started to receive offers for major roles. She allegedly turned down a role in Sucker Punch to star in The Help.

Another surprising fact is that she turned down 21 Jump Street in 2012 to make The Amazing Spider-Man, even though she was unwilling to star in the superhero genre in the beginning.

In an interview with Comic Con Annual 2012 (via Digital Spy), Stone expressed her initial hesitation about taking up the role of Gwen Stacy opposite Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man. She said:

“I heard about Spider-Man and I didn’t think it was something I would want to be a part of. I just thought that probably isn’t right for me. Then I [auditioned with Andrew Garfield] and realised that this was a really interesting, fantastic relationship between two people and that I was being really closed-minded.”

The Gangster Squad actress also had the approval of Bryce Dallas Howard who had played the role of Gwen in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3. Stone has not made any comments about her declining all these other comic book roles so far.
