If you’re into both racing and anime, then Subaru and Subaru might be the next big manga that you should be reading now. The manga is currently being published, with only 40 chapters released so far. In fact, it has only been a year since the manga debuted, so there wouldn’t be a better time to catch up on it.

That said, the Subaru and Subaru manga are technically a sequel series to MF Ghost, which is itself a sequel to Initial D. So, you might want to know whether those are necessary to read first. Also, is there a specific order you need to read Subaru and Subaru in? Here, we’ve explained everything you need to know before diving in.

There isn’t strictly an order to read the Subaru and Subaru manga. You can just read through the chapters one after another in their release order. Also, given that the Subaru and Subaru racing manga is relatively new and still in the early stages of its narrative, there aren’t exactly any official, distinct manga arcs yet.

However, based on the three tankobon volumes released so far, we can break the story down into 3 key events to better understand the ongoing narrative.

1. The Introductory Phase

The story of Subaru and Subaru is set a year after the final events in MF Ghost. Here, we see the world transitioning to autonomous cars. And of course, as the phase title suggests, these initial chapters introduce us to both of our MCs, Subaru Sato from Gunma and Subaru Kudo from Kanagawa. Thus, the title of the manga is Subaru and Subaru.

This first phase of the storyline roughly covers the first 8 to 9 chapters of the manga, which was released as the first tankobon volume.

2. The Qualification Phase

Then, the Qualification Phase covers around Chapters 10 to 20 of the manga (the 2nd tankobon volume), where the two ‘Subaru’s prepare for their qualification rounds to be able to enter the MFG Freshman Series. Some of the Initial D and MF Ghost characters also make cameos in this part of the series.

3. The MFG Freshman Series

Finally, what can be referred to as the core narrative focus of the manga, the MFG Freshman Series race, takes center stage from Chapter 21 onwards. In fact, Chapter 24, titled “The Race Begins,” marks the start of the first major stretch of the narrative. This is where the manga truly starts to shine, and the first part of it is covered in the third tankōbon volume (Chapters 21 to 31).

Do You Need to Read MF Ghost & Initial D to Understand Subaru and Subaru?

You don’t necessarily need to read MF Ghost or Initial D to understand Subaru and Subaru, even though all three are works by the author, Shuichi Shigeno, and are set in the same universe. That said, reading the two earlier series will definitely enhance the experience, as you’ll already be familiar with some of the returning characters, such as Bunta, Ogata, Aiba, and others who make an appearance.

But even if you don’t, Subaru and Subaru remains a standalone tale centered around Japan’s racing culture. The heated rivalry between the two “Subarus” will inevitably get your adrenaline rushing. So, all in all, Subaru and Subaru can easily be called one of the best racing manga. So if you want to read it; here’s where to head next.
