When the trailer for the hotly anticipated Kung Fu Panda 4 dropped, fans were thrilled to see the return of iconic villain Tai Lung. But director Mike Mitchell has now revealed that Tai Lung is just one of several fan-favorite villains making a comeback in the sequel, to be released next year. Mitchell declined to specify exactly which antagonists will resurface alongside Tai Lung in Kung Fu Panda 4. But looking back at the rogue’s gallery in the series, prime candidates range from crafty peacock Lord Shen to ruthless warrior Kai.

Speaking in an interview with Collider, Mike Mitchell teased that

“every single character you remember comes back”

in the fourth installment of the blockbuster franchise. That includes a few other villainous faces that he remained tight-lipped on spoiling ahead of the film’s release.

There’s also the possibility lesser villains like Fenghuang the Owl or Lidless Croc Master Croc could make return appearances. Regardless, Mitchell promises fans will be excited at who ends up matching martial arts skills against Po once again.

Ever since the closing shot of Kung Fu Panda teased there was more to Tai Lung’s redemption story, fans have clamored to see the snow leopard back in action. Actor Ian McShane will reprise his role as Tai Lung over a decade later for the panda warrior’s biggest adventure yet.

Details remain sparse on how the ruthless fighter plays into Po’s quest to find a new Dragon Warrior. But Mitchell cites Tai Lung as his “favorite villain at DreamWorks,” so viewers can likely expect a meaty role for the fan-favorite baddie.

Whether Tai Lung has completed his path to redemption or reverts to his sinister ways remains to be seen. But one thing is certain, with his return and that of other villains, Kung Fu Panda 4 aims to tug on viewers’ nostalgic heartstrings while delivering fresh animated thrills.
