He’s starring in the television show Yellowstone while also working on his passion project called Horizon: An American Saga. Costner is not one to back down from a challenge, and his latest project has certainly had its fair share of them.
Kevin Costner’s Budget for Making Horizon: An American Saga
The iconic action and drama hero Kevin Costner is self-funding his passion project. As bizarre as it sounds, this project has been around for a couple of decades with some of the other hurdles slowing down its progress. Ultimately, Costner decided to put his money where his mouth was and stop waiting for external funding. The project features a Western setting where one hero is enough to make all the necessary differences.
He embarked on this journey with two anonymous investors and is all set to present the first chapter of Horizon: An American Saga in theatres. He revealed to GQ the real cost of making the movie as he said,
I know they say I’ve got $20 million of my own money in this movie. It’s not true. I’ve got now about $38 million in the film. That’s the truth. That’s the real number.
The idea first ignited a flame in Costner back in 1988. Since then, the story has progressed in different directions and taken different forms, but it’s now ready for all to see. Budget has been an ongoing constraint for Costner since Horizon was supposed to be made with Disney at first, but the number didn’t quite match, and the visionary filmmaker and actor decided to walk away.
What is Horizon: An American Saga about?
Horizon: An American Saga will be the first movie in a series of four, all envisioned by Costner and writer Jon Baird. The idea was initially to make one movie, but as Baird came on board, he saw the potential of the story to be told in parts. Horizon is a movie about an eponymous town in America that charts the heartbreaking yet ambitious westward expansion journey of the country.
It is being deemed as a “panoramic portrait of the founding of a town.” What’s more, Costner is ready with not just one, but two chapters of the pioneering project with Chapter 1 releasing in June and Chapter 2 releasing in August this year itself. From his parents’ death to finalizing his divorce from his wife, Costner has had a tough year. However, it seems like working on Horizon has kept him going.
