This is one of the most anticipated Star Wars projects on Disney+, set a hundred years before the events of The Phantom Menace. It will explore the dark side of the Force.
Written by Leslye Headland, the creator of successful TV series like Russian Doll, The Acolyte is expected to bring a new idea to the Star Wars universe. Unlike previous seasons of the show, which took time to introduce viewers to the Jedi knights, this series targets the dark side of the Force, focusing on the Sith and other evil force users.
Neal Scanlan’s Involvement in The Acolyte
Leslye Headland, along with a talented crew, has brought life to this vision, which already puts the series on track to becoming one of the best Star Wars shows. One of the most significant additions to the team is Neal Scanlan, who had previously worked in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Scanlan, who was nominated for an Oscar for his work on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, has stepped in to create the iconic beings that will inhabit the world. Scanlan’s participation has been useful to Headland in the realization of her vision. Headland herself acknowledged his participation in a conversation with The HoloFiles, saying,
He was very supportive of my ideas and my requests. He does so much when you get to work with him. Whether it was the mask with that element of horror with the smile. That was something we worked on for a really long time in terms of how to construct it.
In her own words, while extending thanks to Scanlan, Headland said that Scanlan welcomed all of her ideas and encouraged her. From the design of the horror mask that the villain wears with a smile to designing a functional suit for a new character named Basil, Scanlan has been very helpful.
Timeline of The Acolyte in Star Wars Universe
The Acolyte is set during a critical time in the Star Wars universe, which is the end of the High Republic Era. This was the height of the Jedi Order, and they were at the peak of their glory, ruling the galaxy, exploring new worlds, and teaming with the Republic. But, as the episodes kick off, viewers will see the breakdown of this balance due to a series of killings targeting their community.
Also, as the role of the Jedi begins to be questioned and criticized once they act under the authority of the Republic, as seen in The Phantom Menace, the circumstances are set right for the beginning of the story of the Sith’s rise to power and the Jedi’s decline.
The Jedi of The Acolyte will be the most confident. This will be before the hesitation of the prequels because these are Jedi who are certain they are the ultimate authority in the galaxy.
It will follow the series from the 2022 iteration, titled Tales of the Jedi, which was dedicated to counting Dooku’s transformation into the Sith. The new series will show the audience what the reality is for the Sith, and other Dark Force users.
The Acolyte will be premiered on June 4, 2024 at Disney+.
