“The AI got you, too, beware”: Katy Perry’s Most Viral Met Gala Photo Might be the One Which is a Fake That Even Got Her Mother Fooled
Fans looked forward to seeing Katy Perry back on the red carpet at this year’s Met Gala, but unfortunately, she couldn’t make it to the event. The annual fashion event took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on May 6. But she still managed to stir up a sensation with her 2024 Met Gala look.
Perry is known for her outrageous Met Gala looks, but this year, the internet went wild over a photo that wasn’t even real. An image showing her in a stunning floral gown quickly became the most viral Met Gala photo, but it turned out to be a clever deepfake. No doubt, AI is getting ahead at making things look real, which can make it hard to tell what’s true and what’s not.
Fake Viral Met Gala Photo of Katy Perry Fooled Her Mother
The 2024 Met Gala, with the theme ‘The Garden of Time,’ filled social media with loads of posts featuring celebrities’ outfits. Among them, an image of Katy Perry in a pretty flower dress perfectly matched the theme, inspired by the 1962 short story and the museum’s ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion’ exhibit.
Many praised the dress as the best of the night. But surprise! It turned out to be fake. The 39-year-old herself cleared it up on Instagram, saying, “Couldn’t make it to the Met, had to work,” sharing the fake photo alongside a text message exchange with her mom.
Her mother, Mary Perry, too had been fooled by the image. The singer’s mom complimented her, noting, “What a gorgeous gown, you look like the Rose Parade, you are your own float.” To this, the daughter playfully responded, “lol mom the AI got you, too, BEWARE!”
Katy Perry is a Met Gala Queen
Katy Perry has been a red carpet icon at the Met Gala since her debut in 2009. For her first Met Gala themed ‘The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion,’ she went for a classic and elegant vibe, wearing a blue strapless gown by Tommy Hilfiger.

In 2013, the theme was ‘Punk: Chaos to Couture,’ and Perry went all out in a shiny, crystal-covered dress by Dolce & Gabbana, featuring religious symbols.
In 2015, with the theme ‘China: Through the Looking Glass,’ KP wore a strapless gown covered in graffiti-like spray paint. In 2016, the theme was ‘Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology,’ and the Queen of Pop opted for a backless velvet gown by Prada, complete with black gloves.
In 2017, themed ‘Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-between,’ she stunned in a red Maison Margiela gown. In 2018, in ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,’ the Santa Barbara native looked angelic in a dress adorned with feathers and gold chains.
In 2019, the theme ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ inspired Perry to wear a bejeweled minidress with light-up candles. The same year, she also made waves by dressing up as a hamburger.
