Handful reactions were shared by MTV UK, following the premiere in London yesterday, on 23rd February. “Matt Reeves delivers a nail-biting, gritty and fun Batman coming-of-age story,” revealed MTV Movies’ Hanna Flint. Unilad also called The Batman “absolutely euphoric,” with Total Film calling Matt Reeves’ film “sensational,” while Empire declared it “gripping”. Insider boldly claimed, “Robert Pattinson will be your new favorite Batman.”

Originally envisioned as a DCEU film starring the veteran Ben Affleck, who was meant to direct, co-write and produce the project. After BvS: Dawn of Justice and later the poorly received Justice League and Warner Bros.’ began to change their plans, where Affleck was phased out, with many saying that he did it admittedly of his own volition. Reeves was then tapped to helm and co-write the film alongside Matson Tomlin. At first, it came as a surprise to see Robert Pattinson getting cast as the new Bruce Wayne/Batman in a film that doesn’t exist in the DCEU proper.

“Ben [Affleck] had been working on a version of the script,” Reeves recently explained, “and I said, ‘Here’s the thing: I respect that the DC Universe has become an extended universe and all the movies were kind of connected. But another Batman film, it shouldn’t have to carry the weight of connecting the characters from all those other movies. I didn’t want them in there.”

Rather than going through the Dark Knight’s origin story again, The Batman helps fans jump into the second year of his crimefighting in Gotham as he faces foes like Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin and Edward Nashton/The Riddler. The film also explores the complicated relationship of Bruce with the Selina Kyle/Catwoman, who is played by Zöe Kravitz.
