‘The Boys’ Creator Eric Kripke Needs to Do Justice to One Abused Superhero Whose Comic Version Makes Him the Most Mature Member of The Seven
- The Deep hasn't grown much since 'The Boys' Season 1.
- The Deep's character lacks sympathetic evolution compared to other Seven members.
- Fans think Eric Kripke could have delved deeper into The Deep's character.
The Boys has been always praised for its deep characters, with some even more interesting than in the comics. But one character still seems stuck — The Deep, one of the main antagonists and a member of The Seven.
Season 1 started with a bang, or rather a grope, when The Deep s*xually assaulted Starlight. Since then, his storyline has not gone anywhere. While others, like Ashley and A-Train are struggling to change for the better (with varying success), The Deep seems to be drifting without direction.
Unlike others, The Deep doesn’t get sympathy. The show’s clever writers might have chosen this on purpose. But it leaves The Deep feeling flat compared to his well-rounded teammates.
Eric Kripke Should Elevate The Deep’s Character
Did you know The Deep, the parody of Aquaman from The Boys, is actually a lot deeper in the comics? Fans think Eric Kripke missed a chance to make The Deep (played by Chace Crawford) more interesting by showing how smart and mature he really is, like in the source material.
Fans have noticed that The Deep, who used to be a bright member of The Seven superhero team, has lost his shine in the latest seasons of The Boys. In Season 3, he kept changing who he followed, first joining a strange religion and then going back to his old boss Homelander. His story mostly focused on funny moments in his strange marriage, without much progress in who he is as a person.
In Season 4, The Deep became an even bigger follower of Homelander, with fewer scenes of his own. His occasional moments of thinking about himself are turned into jokes, making him seem pitiful instead of thoughtful.
In Season 1 he was pure power. If he knew about The Boys he could kill them in seconds.
He is literally an immortal god right now.In Season 4 he sends The Deep…the most useless supe.
It is just silly.— MrFreeman (@MrFreemannnnnnn) July 13, 2024
The show focuses a lot on big themes like companies and politics controlling everything. Given that, The Deep’s story might seem a bit irrelevant. He might just remain a loyal follower of Homelander without really changing or growing much.
The Deep Portrayal in The Boys Series is Far Different From the Comics
While the TV show portrays The Deep as a creepy, glory-obsessed jerk who can’t seem to stay out of trouble, the comics paint a different picture. There, he is surprisingly more mature and actually uses his powers for good. He even avoids the whole Starlight situation entirely!
Despite his good intentions, The Deep in the comics still faces ridicule. His teammates mock him, and even his attempts to do good are often ignored. While the show portrays The Deep as a man of few words, this is likely due to the character’s limited role in the comics.
