Theory Time: Could ‘Stranger Things’ Season 4 Pull An ‘Avengers: Endgame’?
It looks like Stranger Things season 4 could be like the show’s version of Avengers: Endgame. You might be wondering how these two media’s can possibly be similar, but we are talking about how the Netflix show could most likely wrap up every major plot thread. Something similar was done in Avengers: Endgame in that it helped finish off the Infinity Saga Arc. But how many chances are there of it actually happening?
Is An Avengers: Endgame Or Spider-Man: Far From Home On The Cards?
It’s easier to see this grand accumulation of Stranger Things’ expanded universe come to pass if, indeed, season 4 is the last. The creators Matt and Ross Duffer certainly plan to make it the last- it would serve as the ultimate climax to the overarching narrative, wrapping everything up in grand style.
On the other hand, there is evidence which suggests that this could still be the case even if Stranger Things 5 gets ultimately produced. The Duffer Brothers have a tendency to not end on big action set pieces but instead on smaller character focused scenes. Some examples include the Snow Ball dance in season 2 and the Byers family moving out of Hawkins on season 3. In this regard, Stranger Things season 5 could work as an epilogue, similar to how Spider-Man: From From Home was an epilogue for MCU’s first saga.
Could Stranger Things Characters Come Back For A Last Huzzah?
One of the ways that Stranger Things season 4 could resemble Endgame is if all the characters- including those from past seasons return to defeat an unstoppable threat. Another way would be if they return to attend a funeral for someone who’s been with them since the beginning. Now, for the Avengers that included minor players like Happy Hogan, Okoye, Pepper Potts, Peggy Carter and more. For the Netflix show we could be looking at Terri Ives, Suzie, Dr. Sam Owens, Eight and Murray Bauman. You can also include Chief Jim Hopper and Dr. Martin Brenner.
Such a list of characters will also necessitate a number of plot threads which were previously thought to be tangential, at best, to also return and be integrated more throughly into the main narrative. A good example of this will be the season 2 episode titled “The Lost Sister“. This episode squarely focused on Eleven, Eight and their misadventures in Illinois. Those figures along with the rest of the test subjects could very well be revealed to be important storytelling facets. This will be similar to how Marvel included the more-or-less standalone Ant-Man movies into its main continuity by using the Quantum Realm.
All of this and more could be done for ending the ultimate evil in the universe- the Mind Flayer, who is the perfect analog for Thanos. Also, viewers shouldn’t be too surprised to see some of their favorite residents of Hawkins being forced to sacrifice their lives in order to seal off the Upside Down once-and-for-all. Although, the parallel dimension could still creep back in a potential season 5 thanks to the Soviets.
