At the premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine recently, Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld spoke about his kids’ reaction to seeing Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine back when the movie was released. Even with his mouth shut and his anatomy ruined, the anti-hero was still standing, forcing young fans to love his bravado.

Liefeld took his young kids to see the movie in the theatres and they absolutely loved Deadpool in the movie despite Wolverine being the hero. In conversation with The Hollywood Reporter,

There’s some juice in this character even when they do him so wrong. Sew his mouth shut, have blades coming out that can’t retract. How does it go all the way up here, how does he move his arms? It was incredible. It might also have been because he was fighting Wolverine, who’s a character that I loved the most growing up.

This is precisely the power of a great character. Even though the entire movie was about Wolverine, Deadpool appeared in the end and stole the spotlight away. A fair share of the credit also goes to Ryan Reynolds who has completely owned the role and creates magic on screen in his red spandex. Fans were divided on their feelings towards his portrayal since some felt it was incredibly unfair, while others loved the zest with which Deadpool fought Wolverine.

Initially, when X-Men Origins: Wolverine premiered, Liefeld was less than happy to see his character treated badly. Liefeld openly expressed his disappointment over the portrayal while appearing on The Big Thing with Kristian Harloff and Coy Jandreau. X-Men: Origins Wolverine showcased Deadpool as a mere weapon and not a human being. Liefeld claimed,

I was very disappointed by it. I knew that they were mistreating him a year out. So, I begged them to do an after credits with him in the mask coming out literally six weeks before it premiered…look X-Men Origins: Wolverine, after the opening with Ryan cutting the bullets with the katanas, that movie doesn’t exist to me.

However, the creator now seems to have changed his mind as he recalls the story of his kids loving Deadpool’s portrayal in X-Men: Origins: Wolverine. Nevertheless, Liefeld has also claimed in the past that he wants Deadpool and Wolverine to interact closely in a movie. With Deadpool & Wolverine, his aspirations are finally being manifested, along with millions of other fans.

Deadpool & Wolverine hits theatres worldwide on July 26, 2024.
