Isabela Merced, the actress who brought Dora the Explorer to life for a new generation in Dora and the Lost City of Gold (2019), is now taking on a new role. Merced is set to portray the iconic DC superhero Hawkgirl in the upcoming Superman film directed by James Gunn.
This isn’t just another superhero casting, it’s a dream come true for Merced. The actress openly talked about her love for DC Comics and how she used to collect DC action figures when she was a kid. She even had figures of Hawkgirl (the one she’ll be playing) and Hawkman.

Isabela Merced said she’d be really happy if people recognize her as Hawkgirl (after she features in Superman) when they see her on the street. She doesn’t necessarily need them to know her real name — just being called Hawkgirl would be an honor for her. In a recent interview with Collider, the 22-year-old said:
“I would be honored for people to see me on the street and just be like, “Hawkgirl!” They don’t need know my name. I’d be honored because, you know what? It also sounds like, “Hot girl!,” and I’m okay with people calling me a hot girl. I’m good. Continue. Same as I was honored by Dora. Because these characters mean so much to other people, I’m just happy that I could potentially hold a special place in their heart. I don’t care what it’s for or what I’ve done. As long as it means something to them, I’m very excited about that.”
Her main request from fans is simple: she wants to hold a special place in their hearts. Whether it’s for her role as Hawkgirl or her previous role as Dora, she’s just happy to have made an impact.
The actress doesn’t really mind what people remember her for or what they call her, as long as her work or her characters mean something to them. The Ohio native excited about the idea of being memorable to people in some way.
Isabela Merced Thrilled to Join James Gunn’s DC Universe
Isabela Merced’s love for DC Comics goes beyond just the characters. The Madame Web star is also a big fan of director James Gunn. She grew up watching his movies, like Scooby-Doo (2002), which had a significant impact on her as a kid. The chance to work with the 57-year-old and contribute to the DC Universe is a privilege she doesn’t take lightly. The PAPI singer said in the same interview:
“To work with him and learn from him, he’s just got such a solid team and a solid way of just doing it. He knows. He just knows. And he likes me too, I think, so that’s awesome.”
Merced’s enthusiasm is adding to the excitement around the movie. Her infectious energy is a great fit for the DC Universe and is getting fans even more eager to see her portrayal of Hawkgirl.
