“This is what I call representation”: Avatar: The Last Airbender Movie Casts a Different Actress for Toph But Fans Are Impressed Despite Original Star Not Returning
Following the success of the animated series and the live-action adaptation, there was no doubt that fans were expecting a continuation of the legendary airbender’s story along with seeing more secondary characters like Toph and King Bumi. Avatar Studios lived up to those expectations and announced their progress on the animated trilogy feature.
So far, the story follows the last surviving Airbender in the quest to master all four elements to end the Fire nation’s war against the world. The animated trilogy will feature adult Aang, possibly back in the Fire Nation for a new adventure. The storyboard artist on Avatar: The Last Airbender and the sequel series The Legend of Korra, Lauren Montgomery, is directing the first installment.
Avatar Animated Trilogy Casts Dionne Quan as Toph
The original actors are being recast in the upcoming trilogy, but Toph’s original voice actor is being replaced by Dionne Quan. Usually, when the original cast is not maintained, fans are very unhappy and critical about it but not here. Surprisingly, fans are impressed with the new voice actor being cast as the strongest Earthbender in the four nations.
The Netflix live-action adaptation is yet to reveal the actor who will play Toph. As seasons 2 and 3 begin production soon, we will get an idea as to which actor will embody the courageous Toph. Seeing one character played by so many actors is intriguing and a bit risky at the same time. Fans might love some castings as they did with Quan while others might be lacking some gravitas.

Toph has been blind since birth, a resilient and light-hearted character who is beloved across fandoms. The animated trilogy hopes to emulate the loyal friend in earnest and maintain the originality of the story. Such characteristics played a huge role in deciding who would be cast as Toph. Dionne Quan perfectly fits the brief, having worked on Rugrats, Bratz, and Fairly Odd Parents before this, she has proved how brilliant her portrayals are, resonating deeply with fans and adding a rich layer of authenticity to the characters she voices.
When will Aang: The Last Airbender be released?
In 2021, after a 13-year wait, Nickelodeon announced the potential release of Aang: The Last Airbender which would show the adventures of adult Aang. In the following year, the trilogy was confirmed. According to Entertainment Weekly, Avatar Studios also said that the three movies would tell separate stories instead of being a three-part series. The first movie, Aang: The Last Airbender is set to release in October 2025.
The Netflix adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender lets us relive the animated series while adding more intriguing facets that fit the epic fight scenes in a live-action format. It recreates the fascinating world of the four nations and their respective powers of element bending. When compared to the last live-action movie attempt, fans have appreciated Netflix’s effort to remain true to the story’s essence. The success of the live-action series has fans excited about the animated trilogy.
