After redeeming itself with the blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine, Marvel Studios has now released the trailer for Thunderbolts*. The studio’s president Kevin Feige is yet to reveal the meaning of the deliberate asterisk. However, a teaser trailer has been released recently and it is everything fans could ask for.
One particular thing that the trailer is particularly attracting attention for is a scene involving Bucky Barnes, better known as the Winter Soldier. Fans are quite impressed with what seems to be a reference from Captain America: Winter Soldier, in which Bucky made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Thunderbolts* Teaser Trailer Has a Reference from Captain America: Winter Soldier
Thunderbolts* is going to be the last movie of Phase 5 of the MCU. As the name suggests, it is based on the eponymous Marvel Comics team of anti-heroes. The team includes Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Wyatt Russell’s John Walker, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier, and several others.
The trailer (via YouTube) opens with Yelena visiting her father, the Red Guardian. Neither of the characters seems too happy with the path their lives have taken. As the trailer progresses, the team shapes up and they try to make sense of what is exactly happening even as they fight with each other.
Bucky Barnes quite literally makes his entry with a bang as he explodes a car in classic Winter Soldier style. The scene is reminiscent of the assassination attempt of Nick Fury in Captain America: Winter Soldier. Fans did not miss the reference and expressed their delight about it.
In the scene from Winter Soldier, after a dynamic car chase through the busy streets of Washington, D.C., Winter Soldier casually walks into the middle of the street with a grenade launcher. He fires it right at Fury’s car, which makes the vehicle fly and flip in the air before crashing into the street. Fury narrowly escapes death at the hands of Bucky by cutting a hole in the car’s floor with a high-tech laser and escaping into the sewers.
Lewis Pullman’s Sentry Makes His Debut in the MCU
The trailer also welcomes Lewis Pullman’s role as Bob/Sentry in the MCU. He appears bemused when the rest of the team turns up unannounced. The Top Gun: Maverick star replaced Steven Yeun as Sentry after The Walking Dead star departed from the role.
Lewis Pullman, the son of Independence Day actor Bill Pullman, has appeared in several projects including Bad Times at the El Royale, Outer Range, and, most recently, Apple’s Lessons in Chemistry, in which he starred opposite Marvel star Brie Larson.
Yeun stepped out of the role of Sentry due to scheduling conflicts. The movie’s release date was pushed due to the dual actors and writers strike in Hollywood. Consequently, Deadpool & Wolverine was the only Marvel movie to be released this year.
Thunderbolts* is set to hit theatres on May 2, 2025.
