Tom Cruise‘s connection with Scientology is well known. He has been a primary advocate of the church for decades. Scientology and its practices have been the subject of controversies for years. Cruise has openly acknowledged his affiliation with the church and is one of the most prolific celebs within the community. Besides notable figures like John Travolta, Nancy Cartwright, and Elisabeth Moss, have also been linked to Scientology. The Scientology religion has transformed into a global religion characterized by a unique set of beliefs and doctrines. The church holds unconventional beliefs like Xenu’s bringing the soul to earth. They regard a person as a spiritual, immortal entity called Thetan that resides in a temporal, physical body; they also believe that individuals have lived in past lives and aim to reach the state called Operating Thetan, where they are freed from all problems and trauma. The actor was found distancing himself from religion in 2021, and his recent revelation of his absence from the headquarters has spelled out discussions regarding his connections to the church.

While his involvement with the church might have played a role in certain aspects of his career, one possibility is that it has contributed to his achievements in the movie industry. It was also speculated that the actor had kept a distance from the church during the filming of Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning Part One. Meanwhile,  the movie Mission Impossible, which was released one week before Barbie and Oppenheimer, suffered from attention. The film grossed $500 million at the global box office and made around $451 million worldwide, which is far less compared to Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan movies.

Being the most renowned actor in the world, Cruise’s most anticipated movie performed below expectations in theaters due to the crippling competition Barbie and Oppenheimer posed.  Because of its bad luck,  it fell into third place in the battle. The audience ware after Barbenheimer, which consequently overshadowed Ethan Hunt.

People choose to celebrate the summer with Barbie and Oppenheimer. The fact that Oppenheimer’s IMAX release was so popular that more screens were added to it rather than being removed from the premium format did not help Tom Cruise’s follow-up. It was believed that Paramount decided to release the movie quite early to avoid competition from Barbie and Oppenheimer, but this didn’t lead to positive results. Now the movie bore the brunt of a Barbenheimer effect.
