They are presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, in recognition of excellence in cinematic achievements as assessed by the Academy’s voting membership.

Tom Hanks’ last-minute joke change

Minutes before going onstage, Tom Hanks was working on a last-minute tweak to his script, asking to swap in a funny reference to Colin Jost, husband of Marvel star Black Widow Scarlett Johansson, instead of Helen Mirren from Fast X in one part of his bit about the Saturday Night Live (SNL) writer looking better than Brad Pitt with his shirt off. He suggested they pan to Jost in the audience as he name-checks the comedian.

The actor said:

“There has never been a museum dedicated to the art and sciences of motion pictures. But it is being born, this labor of love. A bunch of us were over there just this morning. I was putting up some drywall. Scarlett Johansson brought her orbital sander. Brad Pitt was working on the roof with his shirt off, as was Colin Jost, and, dude, that was no contest.”

Viewers at Home were Thrown Off!

While Hanks’s comment about the way Colin Jost looks with his shirt off earned plenty of laughs from the live audience, viewers at home were thrown off. Some called it a “cheap shot,” while others were confused about which actor Hanks was insulting. Tom Hanks being a comedian had no intention to hurt Jost because he had to change his script in the last minutes, Jost’s name was added randomly and Jost ended up becoming collateral damage for the sake of a joke. Many took this on Twitter and posted about this. Have a look at some of the tweets.

Regardless of who he was trying to roast, it was obviously just a joke. Considering Brad Pitt looks like he’s made of stone and Colin Jost makes fun of people for a living on Saturday Night Live, we doubt that either of them was offended by the sassy remark.
