Tom Holland’s First Box Office Bonus For The Avengers is a Lot More Than You Think It Is
Tom Holland’s rise to fame has been credited to his portrayal of the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man in the Marvel movies. Since then, he has forayed into more dark and dramatic roles including The Devil All the Time and Cherry. The British actor has swiftly become a fan favourite as fans look forward to seeing him lead the next-gen Avengers in the Multiversal saga of the MCU.
Tom Hollander Mistaken for Tom Holland
In a recent appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, The White Lotus actor Tom Hollander shared a hilarious incident where his management agency sent Tom Holland’s bonus cheque to Hollander by accident. Hollander was on the show to promote his upcoming movie Feud: Capote vs. The Swans where he plays the titular character of Truman Capote. Talking about the experience, he said,
“I sat smugly in the audience having just done a BBC show for 30 grand or something which was gonna get me through the next year or so, and I was thinking ‘well this is marvellous, I’m very prosperous’ And I’m going to go afterwards and see him [my friend] and slightly patronise him and say how wonderful it was. And then the interval came and I thought I’d check my emails.”
Upon checking his emails, Hollander saw his agency informing him of a massive cheque that was the box office bonus amount for The Avengers. The message contained a payslip that wonderfully surprised Hollander until he saw the name of the movie and the actor associated with it. Hollander further explained that this is not the first time he has been mistaken for Tom Holland as they are both managed by the same agency. He added,
“It’s been very difficult, because you know I was here first but he’s enormously famous. I don’t actually get mistaken for him, but in non-visual contexts I get mistaken for him all the time.”
Hollander is a 56-year-old actor known for movies like Pride & Prejudice, The King’s Man, and Bohemian Rhapsody. It’s impossible to see him and imagine Spider-Man like the image conjured by young Holland.

Tom Holland’s Bonus Amount
Astonishingly, the amount on the payslip sent mistakenly to Hollander was a 7-figure sum. While we don’t know the exact amount, even the figures in the amount are incredibly high. After seeing the amount, The Night Manager actor further clarifies how his smugness drained out of him. A 20-something actor earning way more than an experienced actor is not something we see every day, but then again, maybe that’s the power of being in a massive franchise helmed by Marvel. Hollander expressed,
“It was an astonishing amount of money. It was not his salary. It was his first box office bonus. Not the whole box office bonus, the first one. And it was more money than I’d ever [seen]. It was a seven-figure sum.”
Over $1 million for a box office bonus cheque and not the actual salary is huge. It’s no surprise Tom Holland enjoys doing Marvel movies and getting paid millions for a role he has adored since childhood. Moreover, it’s pretty common for celebrities to earn big bucks through Marvel movies given Chris Hemsworth made $20 million for Thor: Love and Thunder while Robert Downey Jr. got $75 million for Avengers: Infinity War.
