Throughout two wildly successful miniseries, Batman: White Knight creator Sean Gordon Murphy has turned the Dark Knight mythos on its head with his “Murphyverse.” This Elseworlds alternate reality is famous amongst fans and critics alike and offers a different take on Gotham City that’s informed by some of Batman’s most memorable adventures.

White Knight is a perfect vehicle for Conroy, Hamill, and others from that era to reprise their roles in a different Gotham City.

Batman: White Knight, Murphy established this world in 2017, with a story that sees the Joker reverse Gotham City’s perception of himself and Batman. With Batman: Curse of the White Knight, Murphy extended on this world by sinking deep into the Wayne family such that in a tale, it also sees Batman faces off against the violent Azrael. With statues and action figures already worked out for this critically lauded series, these narratives are a multimedia victory that should be brought to life in animation.

DC’s animated films haven’t shied away from DC’s Elseworlds tales, as recent releases like Superman: Red Son and Batman: Gotham By Gaslight. It’s building a platform for non-canonical, standalone stories to be presented to a larger audience that might not be accustomed to anything outside of the DCU. With its mismatch of styles and an extensive array of influences, the movie would be an animator’s dream project come to life. Whereas it would be a challenging task to bring all these elements together into a live-action film, animation removes any creative barriers that might be imposed on filmmakers. More importantly, it encourages the innovative team to break all the rules and bring all the famous Batmobiles together onto the small screen.

Presently, it’s time for the series to grow as a DC animated film.

The requirement of a voice cast in an animated movie is necessary, and the solution is obvious: bring back Kevin Conroy as Batman, Mark Hamill as the Joker, and the rest of the The Animated Series crew wheresoever possible. While the Murphyverse stars a host of notable influences, notably from the live-action films, it’s obvious to see the shadow the heralded show casts on everything else. Murphy even said, “I relish the parts that I saw in The Animated Series of Batman. And I am most satisfied with that class of version, so I comprehended I’d take TAS and kind of upgrade it, make it a little darker, and see where it goes.”
