The second trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings revealed that the film will feature a huge, invincible Hulk villain, and his hatred has been confirmed. The latest trailer took the MCU by surprise, as it showed what appeared to be a battle scene between two returning MCU characters. This burly figure is Emil Blonsky, aka Abomination, more than ten years after his appearance in “The Incredible Hulk” in 2008, before confirming his role as the female Hulk and returning to the MCU. Someone who came out from nowhere would ask questions about whether it was him, and why he would have come back in this situation. After years of waiting, Shang-Chi joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as one of the new heroes (and a potential avenger) in Phase 4, while Liu Simu made his debut as a hero in Marvel.

Although the MCU includes the descriptions of Ten Rings and Mandarin in Iron Man 3 and Ant-Man, the version that appeared in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings still has a long way to go. The Lord of the Rings is no longer just a terrorist organization used in Aldrich Killian’s conspiracy and tricks. They are now true magic artifacts, just like they are in the comics, with a new twist. After Trevor Slattery’s prank in Iron Man 3, the Mandarin in the comics is also more accurate. Like any Marvel Studios movie, Shang-Chi’s film debut has many secrets, but an unexpected character appeared in the second trailer for the movie, including a character from the Hulk series. The second trailer focused more on Shang-Chi’s world building and the legend of the Ten Rings, but the final scene surprised Marvel fans. While Shang-Chi and Katy were watching an underground fighting match, the invincible Hulk villain Abomination suddenly appeared on the field, fighting against a Mystic Arts master. In fact, it seemed to be Doctor Strange’s right-hand man, Wong. Although the design of the Abomination is different, including the new ears, it is undoubtedly the same character, as the precise appearance in the comic confirms this. Before the second release of the Shang-Chi trailer, it was not known that an abomination would appear in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Whether Tim Rose reproduced the role correctly in the movie remains to be seen, but it is not surprising if the stuntman played an abomination in the movie through a motion-capture performance.

After the abomination’s surprise reveal, the bigger question now is why he is here in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and how important his role is. It is safe to say that this is probably a cameo and not anything else, and this is just a glimpse. Because Abomination has not been an active member of the MCU since “Invincible Hulk” in 2008, it does not necessarily make sense for MCU stage 4 movies like Shang-Chi and Legend of Ten Rings to give him a big spotlight. His appearance is likely to be Roth’s major return in the Disney+ show of She-Hulk, because the Abomination was confirmed as the villain in the first season. At least, Shang-Chi can mention what fans have been doing since the last time they saw the Abomination in the MCU.

It’s great to see how Marvel brought back a character like Abomination after being absent for more than 10 years and turned it into a completely different MCU story, such as Shang-Chi. It’s also interesting to see if Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will solve the new look of the abomination, because the Hulk’s villains must have evolved since 2008. As a result, it would be fantastic if Marvel could tell its fans about this character and his story in the film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which will be released in theaters on September 3, 2021.
