SUMMARY
  • Showrunner Jac Schaeffer revealed what made her include Mephisto's name in the Agatha All Along episode 3 narrative.
  • There is certainly a larger game play at work since Marvel is working on how to introduce the devil in the wider universe.
  • Ironheart seems to be the series where Mephisto might make an appearance.

After the smashing success of WandaVision, it comes as no surprise that the spinoff Agatha All Along is also making headlines. Made on a comparatively smaller budget, the show is truly a success as more people tune in to watch the wicked witch in action.

The Funko Pop figurines may have given away the real identities of some characters of the show, but we are led to believe that something darker might be brewing under the surface of the narrative, especially after that namedrop in Episode 3.

Jac Schaeffer was at the helm for WandaVision which went on to be one of the most successful Marvel projects. The performance of the series gave her the confidence to take up the director’s chair when Marvel announced its intentions to make a spinoff on Agatha Harkness. The creative storyteller in Schaeffer was bubbling over with ideas, but as with all franchise projects, there is a larger picture to align the work with.

Pointing at the recent Mephisto namedrop in Agatha All Along episode 3, Schaeffer shared with The Hollywood Reporter,

It was a conversation with [Agatha] executive producer Mary Livanos, [Marvel’s head of streaming] Brad [Winderbaum] and [Marvel Studios boss] Kevin [Feige], but it is a mention that is larger than me and this show. It is the larger Marvel-ness of it. So it is not about me bristling or having any kind of a reaction or agenda, mostly because that type of fevered discourse that is very, very rooted in the comics is not as interesting to me as the current story being told in the series at hand.

Finally, after years of speculations and fan desires, Mephisto seems to enter into the MCU fold with a subtle nod. This is the first time any Marvel project on screen has mentioned the comic book devil’s name, reassuring fans that something supernatural is indeed at work in Marvel’s future game plan. Since the order came straight from Marvel’s super bosses, it’s safe to assume that they will take their sweet time in shaping a story for the character before thrusting him into the foray.

Rumors of Mephisto Appearing in Ironheart

Another series poised for greatness at Marvel is Ironheart. Featuring Riri Williams who was introduced in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the series will feature the intersection of tech and supernatural forces. Recently, actor Sacha Baron Cohen was cast in a mysterious role in Ironheart, which is leading to fans theorizing that he will indeed play Mephisto for the franchise.

The character is known for his penchant for all things evil and hellish. Born out of demonic and human host entities, Mephisto is capable of wreaking havoc on the lives of all superheroes in Marvel and perhaps even some villains. His appearance in the franchise would definitely call for a wider ensemble of characters, some of who are adept at supernatural powers as well.

The greatest hint that backs up these claims? As per the comics, Doctor Doom was the greatest enemy of Mephisto since he trapped his mother’s soul. With Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU as Doom, it seems highly probable that the next big character Marvel will focus on is Mephisto.
