Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga by George Miller is all ready to take the stage in May 2024. It is a post-apocalyptic film that is supposed to serve as both a prequel and a spin-off of Mad Max: Fury Road. It stars big names like Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, and many more.

The trailer started a commotion, to say the least. It did not star Charlize Theron as Furiosa, which, for some odd reason, irked many fans. However, it is a prequel to Fury Road, and therefore, it needs someone younger to play the role.

Not just that, the internet became divided on the CGI and visual effects of Furiosa. While most fans are criticizing the movie for overdoing CGI and VFX, many Anya Taylor-Joy fans are defending the CGI used in the movie.

“CGI isn’t the problem:” Fans become divided over Furiosa trailer CGI

While the trailer shows a lot of potential in areas like acting or plotlines, many fans are slamming the CGI and VFX of of the trailer left and right. When The Hollywood Reporter posted about the trailer on X (formerly Twitter), it got flooded with hate comments and criticism. One user termed it “crap,” while another compared it to dog water. However, many fans of the franchise as well as of Taylor-Joy came out in support of the movie. Many are holding out hope that the “trailer will look 50% more polished by the time the movie arrives” and calling the critics “blind” for criticizing such a “beautiful” trailer.

Mad Max: Fury Road is quite a VFX-heavy film. So, the argument that it uses less CGI does not hold much stance. One thing that needs to be kept in mind is that sites like YouTube or X compress the quality of a video or a picture quite significantly. So, comparing stills from the trailer to 4K images from Mad Max: Fury Road is kind of unjustified.

Although it can be accepted that some of the shots do not measure up to Mad Max: Fury Road, this can be due to John Seal’s absence as the cinematographer. Many shots in the trailer look half-cooked and fans of the franchise noticed that. The audience is yet to see how the plot and the direction develop the story of the movie.

What do we learn from the Furiosa trailer?

The trailer promises a fun, action-packed movie for the audience. Anya Taylor-Joy plays the young Furiosa with flowing hair which gets chopped off at the end into the iconic buzz cut that the character is so famous for. She has to face an almost wild and unrecognizable Chris Hemsworth as the villain Dementus while trying to search for her home all the while protecting a child.
