All You Need to Know About Bradley Cooper 'Jewface' Controversy in Maestro

By Anadya Narain

Merely a day following the release of the initial teaser for Bradley Cooper's most recent film, "Maestro," a wave of controversy has been ignited.

In the upcoming biopic, Cooper takes on the role of portraying the legendary composer Leonard Bernstein.

Although instances of non-Jewish actors portraying Jewish figures have occurred in the past, Bradley Cooper's use of a prosthetic nose in his portrayal is currently facing strong criticism online, with accusations of engaging in offensive behavior akin to "Jewface".

The term "Jewface" carries a negative connotation, denoting the depiction of Jewish individuals in stereotypical or inauthentic manners.

Leonard Bernstein's family however, has supported Bradley Cooper's choice to wear a prominent prosthetic nose while portraying the Jewish composer in the film, despite the controversy.

Bernstein's three children expressed approval of Cooper's use of makeup to enhance his resemblance to their late father.

Born to Jewish-Ukrainian immigrants, Bernstein passed away in 1990, yet his legacy endures as one of the most renowned composers and conductors in history.
