“We’ll do a big wedding”: Barbie Director Greta Gerwig Reveals the Reason Behind Her Secret Wedding With Noah Baumbach
The news of two actors getting married is quite common, but the news of two directors and filmmakers tying the knot is seldom heard. Such is the case with visionary directors Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, who have had a phenomenal couple of years with blockbuster projects like Barbie, Little Women, and Marriage Story. The couple has been together for the past 12 years, and recently, they revealed the reason for their quick wedding.

Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s Wedding Story
After meeting on the sets of Greenberg in 2010, where Noah Baumbach was the director and Greta Gerwig was the lead actor, the two swiftly fell in love and entered into a beautiful relationship by 2011. Since then, the duo has seen their individual careers skyrocket with blockbuster projects and collaborated on Barbie in 2023 to co-write the screenplay.
In December 2023, the couple finally exchanged vows and married each other in a quiet ceremony in New York City Hall. The couple has two kids – 3-year-old Harold Ralph Gerwig Baumbach and a baby girl they welcomed in July 2023. At the 35th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala, Gerwig spoke to ET on the red carpet and revealed the reason behind her small wedding with Baumbach,
“We wanted to do it, we kept waiting for a moment to make a big wedding, but suddenly we were like, ‘We’ll do a big wedding at some point, but let’s just do it.’ And we were like, ‘Let’s go to city hall, and let’s go to Billy Joel.”
After being together for 12 years and having two kids, it’s only understandable that the couple was eager to tie the knot. She further expressed her surprise at the sudden change in the dynamic of the relationship, but they seem to be dealing with it well.
Working on Barbie
Greenberg witnessed both Gerwig and Baumbach in different roles as director and actor, so the duo did not clash on any matters. However, writing a screenplay together is a whole other story, and that too for a movie that will go on to rake millions in profits. Baumbach was initially a bit hesitant to work with his wife on Barbie, but he accepted that she made him a better writer. In a conversation with Variety, he said,
“I know enough always just to follow what Greta says, so even in my bellyaching and revolting, I kind of knew, ‘Well f she really believes it, then there’s something there.'”
The couple truly brings out the best in each other. It was visible in the entirety of Barbie with Gerwig’s patriarchy-shattering narrative and Baumbach’s deeply felt emotions. Fans can’t wait to see what the duo collaborates on next to create utter magic on screen.
