While shooting the movie Rough Magic, Russell Crowe was informed that he had a scene with a tarantula spider in the movie. Although the actor first assumed that the spider would be added via VFX or special effects, his doubts were soon cleared as an animal wrangler arrived on the set and explained how it would go down to film the scene.
Crowe had to lie down on the floor with the tarantula sitting on his chest. The scene showcased the spider crawling up to his neck and face. The wrangler had to tickle the tarantula to make it walk and run. The specifics of the scene involved the tarantula resting in Crowe’s mouth since they look for dark, moist spaces. However, the spider stopped at Crowe’s neck and started spreading its legs across the actor’s neck. Crowe shares with British GQ,
Next day, I wake up and I’m covered in a rash. The doctor arrives and says, ‘Here’s what’s happened you see. When a tarantula gets aroused, it will release these fine hairs from its legs. So what’s happening right now is that your body is covered in tarantula venom. Use these ointments, take these pills and you’ll be fine in a week.’ The point for me in the story is that in the history of motion pictures, I am the only Academy Award winner who’s been f*cked in the neck by a tarantula.
